OTTO, TYLER WEATHERSTON Tyler Weatherston Otto, 28 ,of Guilford, passed away suddenly on January 24th. Tyler leaves behind his beloved parents, Darlene Hacku Otto and John Otto and his brother, Jonathan, all of Guilford. Tyler was deeply loved by many cousins, aunts, uncles and a large circle of very close friends. Tyler was a caring person who would drop whatever he was doing when a friend needed help. Tyler loved his sailing adventures, music, and life outdoors when taking long hikes with his dog, Maya. Tyler was born on May 17, 1985, graduated from Guilford High School in 2004 and attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Tyler was a gifted musician and a hard working carpenter’s apprentice. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Friends are encouraged to be with the family to share memories during calling hours at the Hawley Lincoln Funeral Home in Guilford on Wednesday, Jan.29th, from 4 to 8. A memorial service for Tyler will be held on Thursday, Jan. 30th, at 10am at the First Congregational Church in Guilford. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Faulkner’s Light Brigade or the Guilford Land Conservation Trust for care of the Westwood Trails where he hiked so often.

Before I started the Look for the Good Project and stumbled upon gratitude, I was struggling like most people, just trying to find my way. With a background in science and philosophy - and a hankering for all things spiritual - I asked a lot of questions, too many probably, and was starting to seriously doubt my life. Disturbing thoughts began to flit through my mind and - not knowing what else to do - I started to walk.

I walked to the beach... to the fairgrounds... to the town green... and deep into the marshes and the woods. But no matter how much I walked, I always walked alone. I didn't like to talk to people at that time and was quick to look away whenever anyone passed. I was insecure and embarrassed that "I didn't have it all together yet" until, that is, I bumped into Tyler.

I remember the day clearly: We were in West Woods, in the springtime. The air was crisp and the leaves were just beginning to bud. Tyler was sitting at my favorite overlook, gazing over Lost Lake. His dog Maya sat by his side. Greeting me warmly even though he hadn't seen me for years, something in me softened and I started to talk. Soon we were laughing and by the time I left, I felt rejuvenated and alive. We met serendipitously like this on a number of occasions and, little by little, it shook me out of my fog. Tyler was a musician. He was going after his dream. And if he could do that, why couldn't I?

Thank you Tyler for seeing my potential. Thank you for reaching out when I was withdrawn. You were a light in my world when I only saw darkness. And for that, I will always be grateful. Your presence - although brief - was such a gift.
