William Morann Obituary

MORANN, WILLIAM EDWARD, JR. William Edward Morann, Jr. died peacefully on July 17, 2012 surrounded by his adoring family. William was born in New Haven on April 4, 1928, son of the late William Edward Morann Senior and Margarite (Mulcahey) Morann. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Toohey) Morann and is survived by his sister, Rosemary (Morann) Raw, formerly of Orange. He was predeceased by brother Joseph, and sisters Esther and Margaret (Morann) Connelly. William was a navy veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict where he proudly served aboard the U.S.S. New Jersey, the most highly decorated battleship in U.S. naval history. William was a strong family man who was very proud of his Irish heritage. He was an officer in the local Knights of Columbus. William earned two degrees, one from Quinnipiac College and one from Southern Connecticut University. He was a dedicated school teacher who taught English and math in the West Haven school system for 38 years. He simultaneously worked full time at Marlin Firearms in North Haven for 14 of these years. William was an avid Red Sox fan. He followed UCONN's Women's and Men's basketball programs. He loved swimming, was a competitive diver in high school, and later in life enjoyed sailing. Another favorite pastime of William's was the game of golf. He spent many of his retirement days enjoying golf with his golf buddies. William believed in giving back to the community and coached little league baseball. A devout Roman Catholic, William also taught catechism at St. Clare's in East Haven for several years. William was known by many simply as "Kayo", a nickname bestowed upon him in childhood. He was married to his high school sweetheart and soulmate, Mary for 62 years. In addition to leaving behind his loving wife, William leaves 8 children: daughters Kathleen Dornfeld and her husband Bill of Branford, Nancy Morann Addario and her husband John Addario of East Hampton, Susan Camera and her husband Sal of Old Saybrook, and Karen (Morann) Vanacore of East Haven; sons William E. Morann III and his wife Laura (Mayer) Morann of Madison, John Morann of East Haven, Kevin Morann and Gina Raucci of East Haven, and Christopher Morann of East Hartford. William was a devoted grandfather to 11 grandchildren. They were a source of great joy in his life: William Dornfeld and wife Melody, Jessie Mills and husband Brad, Ryan Addario, Ashley Camera, Tom, Tara, Kelley and Kaitlin Vanacore, Liam and Logan Morann, and Carissa Morann. William also leaves behind 6 beloved great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. William was a true gentleman who touched the lives of countless many. He will be sorely missed by all. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in William's name to a charity of choice. Friends and family may call Friday from 5-8 P.M. at the Clancy Funeral Home, located at 43 Kirkham Ave in East Haven, CT. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 A.M. at St. Clare's Roman Catholic Church located at 234 Coe Ave in East Haven, CT. So very sorry to hear that my old school teacher from Union School West Haven who I had in 5th grade in 1955 has passed away..Bill like all teacher's of that time period left a special mark on all the children they taught..Me included..Bill taught me how to fold a sailor hat to carry in my pocket..I use to wear one from time to time as a kid..Bill was the very first person I saw write left handed, he had this real curve in his left hand when he wrote I as a kid was amazed that someone could write with their left hand..He was in charge of his class no fooling around..I could tell you some stories of him and I and the little troubles I'd get into..
So my dear friend and teacher..Rest in peace and God Bless his family..
