Scott Mattson Obituary

Scott D. Mattson July 6, 1943 - September 19, 2023 Scott D. Mattson was born in Olympia, WA on July 6, 1943. He is the 2nd of two boys and is survived by his older brother, Jeff of Dana Pt., CA.

He was raised in Lacy, WA on the lake and graduated from North Thurston High School. In 1964, Scott joined the Navy "to see the world" and served in Norfolk, VA on the U.S.S. AMPHION, AR13, a repair ship. He served 4 years in the Navy.

While in the Navy, his parents moved to Spokane, WA for his father's work (WSP).

In 1967, Scott went home to Spokane where he met "the girl across the street", Krista Backenstoe.

He attended the Colorado School of Trades to study "gun smithing". Two years after his return to Spokane, he married Kris in Spokane in August of 1971.

Scott joined the Washington State Patrol (WSP) and moved to North Bend, WA as a radio dispatcher while completing his college education. In 1973, he attended the patrol academy and upon graduation, was assigned to Ellensburg, WA.

He and Kris purchased a 1900 farmhouse and restored it. Scott and Kris divorced in 1983.

Scott and Phyllis met in 1979 but didn't start dating until 1983 and then married in Oct. 1985.

They bought a home in the Manastash area - this would be their home for 36 years.

Scott had been a firearms instructor for the patrol, so he taught Phyllis how to shoot and after "qualifying" the troops - he'd take her out and "qualify" her.

They got into I.P.S.C., .22 Postal shooting, 3 gun Cowboy Matches and spent a week at Jeff Cooper's Gun Site Shooting School in Arizona.

Scott LOVED attending gun shows with his friend, Rick. He would sell "things" for a while, then wander the aisles looking to expand his collection even more.

Scott was diagnosed with Alzheimer's first and then two years later with Parkinson's. Scott passed, PEACEFULLY, the early morning of Sept. 19, 2023.

He brought a lot of laughter to our home. He wasn't much of a "talker", but would come up with a "HYSTERICAL" one-liner that would "crack you up."

He is survived by his brother, Jeff, wife, Phyllis, step kids, Brian, Mary, Denise and Jeff. He was "PAKA" (grandpa) to Brandi, Chris, Natalie, Abby and Garrett, and Taryn.

He was GREAT PAKA to Sadie & Eliza.

He is missed & will, always be LOVED!

Trooper Scott Mattson worked for me for about 15 years. He was always sharp, professional and a dedicated lawman. Scott and Phyllis hosted many get together at their home and were very special couple.
Scott will be missed.
