Amy and Dave and Bunning Family,
You are in my thoughts and prayers. Had fond memories with both of you in High School at Notre Dame Academy and Newport Central Catholic High School. I will always remember the Signed baseball bat rung steps leading to your basement! I had the deepest respect for your father. May God hold you and provide you comfort.

Jim and Joan, I have fond memories of you at St Catherine, at CYO, swim parties, etc; and how welcoming and friendly your family was. Find comfort in knowing that your Dad lived a rich and full life and left this world better than he found it. God Bess!

In my search for the final resting place of my Uncle Eddie, Pvt. Edward R. Sowder, I contacted Senator Bunning's office and received a package filled with everything I needed. Pvt. Sowder gave his life for our country following the D Day Invasion June 11, 1944. He was a member of the 101st Paratroopers. Because of Senator Bunning taking the time to reply to me my daughter and I were able to travel to France to the cemetery in Normandy and visit my Uncle Eddie's grave. I will be forever grateful for the information, which even included a picture of my uncle's headstone, and a personal letter of condolences from Senator Bunning. I give recognition to him in the album I treasure of my Uncle Eddie's life and ultimate sacrifice.
God bless this caring man and may He give comfort to the Bunning family during this time of profound loss.

Jim Bunning, Al Kaline, Stormin Norman Cash, Frank Lary, and Rocky Colavito were our big baseball heros , winning 101 games in 1961 and STILL finishing second to the Yankees. Our little league team (from Ann Arbor) went to Tiger Stadium that year (and in later years) to see Jim pitch against the Yankees..and also a tigers father-son game. Jim Bunning was serious about his game/talent, more athletes should follow his example. "Life is real, life is earnest" is an old saw, but Jim Bunning's career in sports and politics, and living a Christian life are examples for all of us.
Listening to Mel Ott and Van Patrick, later George Kell and Ernie Harwell on the Tiger broadcasts of games with great players like Jim Bunning are fond memories that stay with us aging baby boomers from Michigan. Thank you for your service to your country, to your faith, and to your fans. Well done, good and faithful servant!

Someone remembers, someone cares. Someone whispers your names Jim, Mary & all "niners & their families" in special remembrance prayers at this time of your loss...On behalf of your deceased friends DR. William I.OB/GYN & Mary McDermott Huesing & their deceased son USAF retired Major William C Huesing & his deceased sister Margo Huesing, I Jacqueline B. Huesing will continue to treasure the many happy memories that I treasure from our 1st meeting March 1965 at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Ft. Thomas, Kentucky. Always "DAD" (Dr. Bill) had a happy smile every time he came home and shared with Mother (Mary McD) each birth of your children. He was elated with the healthy delivery of each one of your babies! While my spouse Bill a pilot was on remote and active duty in Viet Nam "I" came home to Ft. Thomas for the birth of our 1st child, Doctor Bill and Mary's 1st grandson, William McDermott Huesing born 12-13-'70. Although Dad passed away 1 month later 1/17-'71, Ft Thomas remained my 2nd home during and after bill's military career. I continued to visit friends, relatives in the Greater Kentucky/Cincinnati area, and for many years followed your local news via the Kentucky Post & Cincinnati Enquirer. We faithfully followed Jim's baseball & political careers. From my 5' view Jim was always bigger & taller then life to me in many "complimentary ways"! God rest his soul in eternal peace. With heartfelt love and sympathy from the William Huesing families. Peace be with all. Jacqueline B. Huesing, Carmichael, Ca.

A little local memory of Jim pitching in the off season at St Thomas High School where I was a Senior at the time. His brother-in-law and my high school coach Dick Hehmann played in the Gym on occasion, I played catch with him. Later on I was able to coach him during a old timers game at St Mary's field, he played in the Holy Name league before going to the majors. As I remember he pitched 4 innings in the game. He was as a lot of people stated already a true gentleman. Thanks to Dick Hehmann and St Thomas High School for allowing me to make the connection to Jim.
Condolences to Jims wife and her family of Southgate, Ky

Dear Mary and Family,

Our sincerest sympathy to you all at Jim's recent passing.

We, too, will miss him greatly! He was a wonderful Christian gentleman, a great boss, and a most conservative voice in Congress during his terms as our KY Representative and Senator. It was a great pleasure to work for him as Staff Assistant, and to call him friend!

With our love to you all,

Along with Chris Short, Jim Bunning was one of the two Pitchers that my generation of Phillies fans will always remember as the best Pitcher to ever put on the pin stripes of our team, he was truly a professional in all of his endeavors be it raising a family, playing Major League Baseball or working for his Constituents. He was a hero to thousands of grade school kids and I was one of them, I just want to say that I am very grateful that I was able to be a part of this group that followed him and his teammates in the Sixties and just want to say Thank You Jim for accepting the offer to join our team, God rest your soul big guy!

In 1964, I was 14. I lived in Queens, NY. The Worlds Fair was on and Shea Stadium was new. My parents dropped me off to see the Phils v Mets. A double header. I wound up seeing a perfect game and a bunch of Callison homers. Not a bad day for a Phillies Phan from Queens. Rest In Peace Jim Bunning and thanks for the memories.

I was ten that year of 1964 and it was my custom, when I wasn't with friends, to watch the Phils on channel 6 with commentary from By Saam, Bill Campbell, and Richie Ashburn. I watched every pitch of the game (as, two years earlier, I had listened to each of Wilt Chamberlain's 100 points at Hershey). Once it became obvious that something historic could be taking place, my watchfulness became prayerful, superstitious, as if by watching intently I could further empower Jim Bunning in his question for baseball history. For me as for a million other Philadelphians, Bunning was transformed that day from star player into something akin to a god, with charisma attached to details of his private life, especially perhaps his large family; his insurance career in the off-season; his boyhood in Fort Thomas; his leadership in the players' union. Jim, you gave us some of the best sports memories of our lifetimes. All Philadelphians of the Sixties tonight mourn your loss, pray for your family, and thank you for sharing with us the game of life you played so well.

Senator Bunning, first off I would like to thank you for your service to our country. You were my first favorite baseball pitcher when I was a little boy, with the Phillies and then with my hometown Pirates. May God rest your soul, old friend.

Jim Bunning was my favorite Tigers pitcher growing up in Detroit and later in Boston.
Best game I went to was May 18, 1959 when Bunning pitched and batted 'my' Tigers to a 14 to 2 win over dad's redsox.
Bunning Homered and tripled in the game and Baseball Reference player index says he is the only pitcher to accomplish that feat.
One of the worst trade the Tigers ever made was when they traded Jim to the Phillies. The Tigers loss was the Phillies gain.
RIP Mr. Bunning you were great!!

As a 10 yr old I kept score of that father's day game, never knowing how important it would be. I still have the scoreboard with other memorabilia.
I was lucky enough to meet Mr. Burning in 1996 at a Baseball Legends golf trip at Amelia Island and sat next to him on a bus trip. It was quite an honor for a guy from philly who emulated his pitching style as a boy.
God speed and blessings to your big family.

Jim,you were one of the greatest competitors to ever take the mound. But also off the field you were the embodiment of a family man and professional.I always wanted to write you a personal letter before it was too late.Hope this makes up for it.

The perfect game in the imperfect season: I watched the game on a TV that was placed on a picnic table at an outdoor BBQ with Uncle Drew. Gus Triandos caught the game, the first of a double-header. What a day. The same day Kenny Ventura won the Open. I was 11, and I'll never forget the game or the man. RIP Mr. Bunning.
