Patrick Monahan Obituary

Patrick "Pat" C. Monahan

Powell - The Honorable Patrick "Pat" C. Monahan, 72 years well-lived, formerly of Cincinnati and Shawnee Hills, Ohio and most recently residing in Powell, Ohio passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2021 from Aggressive Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. He was surrounded in love and comfort by his wife, children, and stepchildren and was at peace as he transitioned.

Pat was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 24, 1948 to Loretta Goode Monahan and William Charles Monahan who precede him. Pat is survived by his wife, Julia Larkins-Monahan of Powell, Ohio; children, Kelly Petit (Joe Haugh), Katie Wedig (Kevin), Krissy Holton (Matt) and Sean Monahan (Natalie) all of the Cincinnati, Ohio area; stepchildren, S. Colin Winter (Kelany Courtright) of Dublin, Ohio and Bree Tingler (Brandon) of Powell, Ohio; grandchildren, Chris Petit (Lisa), Ted and Hannah Petit, Mary Denney (Kyle), Cara Fultz (Kevin), Jenna and Leah Wedig, Megan and Drew Holton, Barrett Monahan, Jack Logan Winter, Brody Saneda, Tatum Winter, Ryan Winter and Ellowyn Tingler; great-grandchildren, Nora and Harper Denney and Owen Fultz; brother, Dr. Mike Monahan (Barb Cramer) of Mesa, Arizona; nephew, Andy Monahan (Casey) and niece, Amy Monahan-Curtis (Tim); sisters-in-law, Kathy Larkins and Kim Lawrence; cousins, Molly Shell, Betsy Monahan and Tom Monahan; the community of Shawnee Hills, Ohio and so many dear friends across the globe.

Pat attended St. Gertrude elementary school in Madeira, Ohio and maintained life-long connections with his grade school friends and teachers by organizing annual gatherings. We would gather and laugh over shenanigans of days gone by and Pat always gave the following toast, "How wonderful it is to have been raised by good people and be surrounded by good friends". Pat also attended Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati, where, true to his style, he remained engaged for the rest of his life supporting the school, speaking to the students on Veterans Day and helping to create the Moeller Veterans Memorial. Pat also attended the University of Cincinnati night school.

Pat began a career with AT&T at the age of 17. It was after starting at AT&T that Pat, a true patriot, volunteer-drafted to serve our great country during the Vietnam War with the 4th Infantry Division. He was a combat infantry squad leader stationed in Pleiku, Vietnam where he led his troops for a year in a war zone and proudly never lost a soul. It was during this time that Pat was poisoned with the defoliant, agent orange which returned 52 years later to cause the cancer that took him from us far too soon.

When Pat returned from Vietnam, he continued his employment with AT&T eventually retiring in 1998. During his tenure with AT&T, Pat served as the local representative for the Communications Workers of America (CWA). He was also a community leader serving on the Board of the Cincinnati Community Chest. Pat moved to Shawnee Hills, Ohio and began a new career as a Director with Qwest Communications. Pat also worked as a VOIP Architect with Bank One (now Chase Bank) and in his final career, he was employed with Sterling Commerce/IBM as a Client Executive.

It was not long after Pat moved to Shawnee Hills, Ohio that he began to serve on the Shawnee Hills Village Council. He was asked to run for Mayor of Shawnee Hills, was elected and served honorably for 13 years. He resigned as mayor in July of 2020 due to his illness. During his time as mayor, he worked with the village council and the community to continue the transformation of the village to a place people would want to raise a family. Pat's vision came to fruition with the building of parks, a playground, a shelter for village gatherings, a robust police department, a new municipal building, sidewalks, streetlights, benches, village picnics, and holiday tree lightings with bonfires. Pat also helped to design and build the Shawnee Hills Veterans Memorial in a park which was dedicated in his honor during the Shawnee Hills Veterans Day Celebration last November. It is now called the Monahan Veterans Memorial Park. Pat was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and the Ohio Mayor's Association.

Pat Monahan was larger than life and demanded excellence. He was beyond charismatic, had a twinkle in his eye and he loved win-win situations. Pat was a leader among leaders and a passionate driver of his visions. There was never a stranger that didn't immediately become a friend; there was never a story left untold; and there was a plethora of useless trivia Pat used to keep his mind sharp and his audiences entertained. Pat loved sports especially baseball, softball, and football. Pat had a passion for motorcycles and cars and owned a total of 63 cars over the years. He purchased his last car after his cancer diagnosis because he fully believed he would beat his illness. Pat loved his big brother, Mike as they shared an incredibly special brotherly bond and friendship that lasted his lifetime. Pat's greatest joys were his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He knew he was truly blessed by all of them and family was everything to him.

I am so sad. I have known Pat since we grew up on the same street in Kenwood.
He was our St. Gert,s rock. He kept us close with his outings for us. What will we do without him?

Back in 2006 a Gentleman by the Name of Bill Hopkins approached me about Building a Veterans Memorial in Shawnee Hills. I knew Bill and Jack Frambees from my younger years the Bill introduced me to Pat while he was serving as Mayor. With us 4 getting together at Iacono's for Beverages, Dinner and laughs we built the Memorial in 4 1/2 months. I was not a Veteran but these 3 Gentleman I got really attached to and was on Veterans Council with them. We had a Ceremony every year since 2006 and Pat would always contact me for my advice for Honorees and different Ideas also would invite me to open the Ceremony. I took alot of pride in that and Pat told me that I should because as far as he was concerned I had served in the Forces. Pat called me up to his last week of being with us, we talked about my Father ,Son and Daughter being deceased in the same year. Pat was with me when I found my Father had past in his sleep, he called all Depts needed for response of passing of my Father. I greatly appreciate our Friendship we had and will always remember our times together it was a hoot. Bill Hopkins is all I have left now from our Ventures and I will continue to keep the Memorial standing beautifully as long as I can.
RIP My Friend until we meet again

The iron grip of his handshake. A clear, soul seeking look in his eye. Words you knew were true, with no deception and straight to the point, as he spoke. Quick to laughter from deep within his heart.
A true warrior. A good man. A leader.
An inspiration.
This is the man I met all those years ago. The man I knew through these years.
The man who now shines above us as one of the brightest stars.

Look up and see him. He now watches over us from so far, high up in the heavens. He is infinite.

Pat was one of those people you looked forward to being around. I generally only saw him the last few years at company Christmas parties, but I always enjoyed our conversations, and looked forward to them. He always emitted positivity, and you felt like you were a life long friend. He will be sorely missed, and always remembered fondly. God bless Pat, and his entire family in these trying times.

Worked with Pat at AT&T, served with him when he was the CWA Union local president, played softball for several years on the same team or in the same league. One time we worked in Dallas, TX for a few weeks preparing for strike duty but most of all we are fellow Vietnam Veterans. When I read he had Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma my mind immediately jumped to Vietnam and Agent Orange. Another brother succumbed to, and his family has been affected by this chemical due to serving our country. Pat went all out when he did something and I am sure he fought all the way to the end.
My sincere condolences to the entire family in his loss.
