Agatha Wahl Obituary

WAHL Agatha W. Wahl Former special education teacher, 95 Agatha W. Wahl (nee Whelan) died peacefully in her sleep on May 9, 2007, in Juniper Village, Chatham. She was 95. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at St. Thomas More Church, Convent Station, at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Montclair. Hours of visitation prior to Mass will begin at 10 a.m. at the Doyle Funeral Home, 106 Maple Ave., Morristown. Born and raised in Nutley, Mrs. Wahl fondly recalled riding her horse along the tow path of the Morris and Essex Canal from Nutley to Lambert Castle in Paterson, as well as riding the trolley cars from Nutley to Newark, where she attended St. Vincents Academy for grammar and high school. She married her grammar school sweetheart, George P. Wahl, and settled in Maplewood. They moved to Clifton in 1969, and she moved to Juniper Village at Chatham five years ago. Mrs. Wahl was a special education teacher in the City of Orange school system for many years. She received a bachelors degree from the College of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station and her masters degree from Seton Hall University. Active in athletics, she played both basketball and field hockey in high school and college and played semi-professional basketball after college on a Newark team known as Stanleys Lassies. An avid bridge player, Mrs. Wahl was a former member of the Orange Lawn and Tennis Club and the Upper Montclair Country Club. Her husband; parents, Edward P. Whelan, M.D., and Louise Whelan (nee Delveaux), and brother, John Whelan, all died previously. She is survived by her four sons, Edward and his wife, Marion, of Naples, Fla., Anthony and his wife, Jane, of Mendham, Timothy and his wife, Julia, of Newport Beach, Calif., and Andrew and his wife, Gloria, of Hillsborough, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations in Agathas memory to ARC of Morris County or the College of Saint Elizabeths, Convent Station, N.J., would be appreciated.
