Albert Mintz Obituary

Albert Mintz, age 85, died in Touro Infirmary on Wednesday, August 12, 2015. Mr. Mintz was a first generation American, born in New Orleans, LA on October 19, 1929 to hard working Russian parents who immigrated to the United States in the 1920s. He graduated from Newman High School at age 15, Tulane University at age 18, and Tulane University School of Law at the age of 21. He joined Montgomery Barnett Law Firm in 1956 and continued practicing from his home office until taken ill in February, 2015. His academic training also included one year of pre-med. Albert was studious, dedicated, and committed. His interests were wide and as a boy, he worked for his family's furniture store, Hurwitz Mintz on Royal Street. Not just a student, Albert had a quick wit, loved to play all sports--especially tennis--and was a fine dancer. At age 21 he became the ping-pong champion of New Orleans. Aa a partner of Montgomery, Barnett, Brown, Read, Hammond & Mintz--he was engaged in business, partnerships, and corporate law, including taxation, mergers/acquisitions, banking, finance, real estate, estate planning and insurance defense. He was a lawyer's lawyer who truly loved his work. Mr. Mintz was one of the first accredited Tax Specialist and Estate Planning and Administration Specialist in New Orleans. He was a member of local, state, and national Bar Associations, the New Orleans Bar Association Executive Committee and Ethics Committee. He enjoyed his involvement in the American Law Institute and was admitted to practice before the US Supreme Court. He served as Chairman of the Civic Affairs Committee and State Legislature Committees of the Chamber of Commerce. For decades, Mr. Mintz was involved in numerous civic, religious, and educational organizations such as the Jewish Endowment Fund, Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans, Touro Infirmary Board of Trustees, Touro Infirmary Foundation, and The Jewish Community Center. Albert served as the liaison between Touro Hospital's medical staff and Tulane Medical School. He is responsible for encouraging his client Charles Buckman to leave the largest bequest that Touro has ever received--enabling the construction and operation of the essential Buckman Building. Mr. Mintz was on the Board of Directors of Temple Sinai and an annual supporter of the Southern Institute. He served on numerous Tulane Law School boards, as well as being a stalwart member and co-chairman on The Tulane's Summer Lyric Theatre Board. He was a charter member of the Louisiana Bar Foundation and the Louisiana Historical Society. Mr. Mintz was esteemed for his many community endeavors. In 1999 he was chosen to be the recipient of the Judah Touro Society Award. He was honored by the New Orleans and Louisiana Bar Associations for his 50th year of practice. In 2001, he was named The Outstanding Tulane Alumnus of 1951 and received honors for The Outstanding Volunteer of the Year, including the Law School's award for highest ethics. In 2003, The Young Leadership Council named him as a citizen "Role Model". With an early start to his busy career, Albert received innumerable accolades. Mr. Mintz encouraged his wife, Linda Barnett Mintz, to get her college degree, make excellent grades, and graduate with a Master's Degree in Theatre from Tulane University. He relished the spotlight when it shined upon his wife through appearances on television, stage and radio. When his wife was Miss Linda of Romper Room fame, he liked to call himself, "Mr. Linda." He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Linda Barnett Mintz of New Orleans; sisters-in-law Walda Barnett Besthoff and brother-in-law Sydney Besthoff of New Orleans; and sister-in-law Jean Mintz of Houston,Texas. He will be dearly missed by his adoring children, John Mintz of New Orleans, Margaret Mintz-Easthope of Seattle, son-in-law Thomas Easthope and devoted grandchildren Evan and Virginia Easthope. Albert was a fixture in the lives of many nieces and nephews who live in New Orleans, Monroe, Dallas, Houston, New York and Philadelphia. Albert is preceded in death by his parents Goldie Goldblum Mintz and Morris Mintz; brother Ellis Mintz; sister Bella Mintz Shlansky Goldberg; and younger brother Saul Mintz; and his in-laws Walter and Virginia Mae Barnett. Miss Linda and John , My son James and I are so saddened by Mr . Albert's passing. He would boast about his family with such pride. He was so wonderful to myself and my son. He was such an advocate for me through legal representation. He also is such a role model to my son who looked up to him like a grandfather that he never had. We were very fond of he and he will truly be missed. We are praying for your strength.

August 17, 2015

Mrs. Linda, I didn't know Albert all that well as I'd only met him a handful of times, but I felt like I did because my husband, Richard Delcambre, talked very fondly and often about him. Albert was valued as a friend of Richard's and advised many people he knew to seek out Richard's knowledge on tax problems. For that loyalty, we were very grateful. I am very sorry for the loss of your husband and the loss of a Father and Grandfather. May God bless your family and bring peace and strength in your time of sorrow.
