Alberta McManus Obituary

Alberta Vaughan McManus, A bishop's wife and church and school administrator, died Thursday of cardiopulmonary arrest at Methodist Hospital. She was 79. Mrs. McManus was born in Violet and lived in New Orleans for the past 46 years. She graduated from Nichols High School and received an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Friends International Christian University. She was one of the founding members and a Elder of City Cathedral where, since 1945, she had served as organist, choir director, ladies' ministry director and missions director. She served along with her husband as associate pastors, State Youth Directors, and State Evangelists for the Church of Good for 11 years. She participated in the building of 11 churches in Louisiana and 12 churches on the mission field, traveling to over 30 countries in ministry. Mrs. McManus and her husband founded Bishop McManus Academy which she administrated for 31 years. She was the Executive Producer of, and visionary behind, ""The Family of God television show.'' Mrs. McManus was an ordained minister with Christian Fellowship International. She gave of herself ceaselessly and selflessly to all who know her. As Director of the City Cathedral Performing Arts Dept. for over 40 years, she produced countless theatrical musical productions, touring throughout the United States and abroad; but what set her ministry apart was the spirit of excellence with which she worked, combined with a spiritual anointing that touched thousands of lives. She was frequently called upon to address national and international conferences in the areas of church music and theatre. Survivors include her husband, Bishop Owen McManus; 2 brothers, Admiral Vaughan, Jr., and Reed Vaughan; 4 children, Carol Land, Deborah Holland, Pastor Owen McManus, Jr., and Candace McManus; 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. A funeral will be held on Sunday, January 9, 2005 at 11 AM at City Cathedral, 8801 Chef Menteur Hwy. Public visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. Burial will be at St. Vincent de Paul Mausoleum and Cemetery.

I just learned tonight that Sister McManus had passed away. My son and I were both hospitalized at the time of her death and missed seeing the notice in the paper. We have also missed the program for the last few weeks so was quite surprised when I did not see her on the program tonight. She will be greatly missed and was loved by so many people. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, especially beautiful little Allie and Brooke.

I have many wonderful memories of Sister Mc and singing with the choir under her leadership was a beautiful experience. She was a very special person. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of the McManus family and the church. I know she has to be working with that heavenly choir now and is a beautiful angel watching over everyone she loved. God bless each of you and may he give you strength to deal with your loss.

Sister McManus

Was a welcoming face and opening arms on my first visit to New Life. She gave me great comfort at the time of my mothers death. Allowed me to be apart of church and school. Encourged me and gave me opportunity to be used of God. She was a wonderful women of God. My condolences to her family.

Rev. Owen McManus and Family;

I would like to send my sincere condolences on the death of Sister McManus, wife and mother. I know she will be greatly missed by you and your family and also by all who knew her. I had not seen her in quite sometime, but have great memories of the days that I had the privilege of knowing her and being around her. They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them, but an entire life to forget them.

My prayers and thoughts are with you in this time of sorrow. My God bless you and comfort your hearts.

Love,

Mary
