My friend, Allen,
Five years surely have gone by very rapidly. Nonetheless, the passing of time has not faded my memories of Allen or lifted the pain of Allen leaving us. I shall always be grateful and cherish the many times that Allen made us smile, got things right, and made personal sacrifices to help me and so many others. Marilyn and the boys, stay strong and keep your faith!
Respectfully submitted,

October 18, 2014

At birth, we board a train and meet our parents. We believe they will always travel by our side. However, at some station, our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone.

As time goes by, other people will board the train, and they will be significant - siblings, friends, the love of your life, children, and many others. Some will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we won't realize they vacated their seats.

The train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, good-byes, and farewells. A successful ride requires having a good relationship with all passengers. We must give the best of ourselves.

The mystery to everyone is, we do not know at which station we ourselves will step down. So, we must live in the best way, love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are. It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of life.

I wish you a joyful journey on the train of life. Reap success and give lots of love. More importantly, thank God for the journey.

Lastly, Allen, I thank you for being one of the passengers on our train. You will be missed.

Allen has been a very good friend since 1983. We shared many days and various activities together. I am saddened that he is no longer here with us, but I know that he has traveled a path that all of us must go. Right from the time we got to know each other, it was quite clear that he very much adored Marilyn and his boys (Allen, Jr. and Jeremy). Also, he made it clear that he was New Orleans completely throughout, from head to toe. I was born and raised in north Louisiana and I had many laughs with Allen as we shared stories, really wild stories, about the advantages of southern Louisiana versus northern Louisiana and vice versa. And I won't even mention the wonderful days Allen, Kelley, Hazel, Dean, Janette and I had teaching at the Houston Police Academy in the late 1980s. I shall miss him. To me, his death blows out a candle that shed light on a long dark road.
To Marilyn and the rest of the family, stay strong and keep your faith. It is my wish that the Grace of God, Love of Jesus Christ and Communion of the Holy Spirit continue to Guide, Bless and Keep You!

I hope someone will give Allen a deck of cards to take with him. Richard Gex is up there waiting for his bid whist partner. And when our time comes, we'll take a few decks too and keep the game going! Allen was a Xavier classmate who like myself spent a lot of time in our freshman year playing cards in the cafeteria -- if only I could go back for one day to run a "Boston" and give him a good "whupping!" CHEERS and good bye Baquet! May God's love guide you home and give comfort to your family. I bid "7 hearts uptown!"
