Alma Woodfork Obituary

Alma (Minnie) Jacques Woodfork a former community activist for the Treme community area of New Orleans, died on August 24, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family following a lengthy illness at the age of 76. She worked relentlessly to upgrade her community for decades such as, but not limited to; applied for funds from the federal and local governments to paint low income families homes, spearheaded voter registration in her community, provided childcare service in her home, and through donations received from local businesses, she prepared and delivered food baskets to needy families and distributed toys to disadvantaged children, she also held forums of candidates seeking public office for the residents of her community. To know her was to love her she was a very jovial person that gave a lot of herself to comfort others. Her greatest honor bestowed upon her was to have received the Thomas Jefferson Award in 1981 in Washington DC, a national award given to individuals in the United States who have performed outstanding service to their community. Alma relocated to Timmerville, South Carolina to be surrounded by her daughter Claudia and son-in-law Russell Duffins and grandchildren due to the devastation anticipated from Hurricane Katrina, as a native New Orleanian it was difficult for Alma to leave her beloved city, family, friends, club members and classmates, class of 1959 of Joseph S. Clark Sr. High School. She became a resident of the Timmerville community for the passed ten years. Alma was the devoted wife of the late Henry Woodfork, Sr., cherished daughter of the late Alvin Jacques, Sr. and Dorothy Angelrty Jacques, dedicated mother of Henry, II, Leroy, Keith and Lorell Woodfork and Claudia W. Duffins, beloved grandmother of Henry, III, Dominque, Lauren Woodfork, Ashley (Shannon) and Alexis Duffins, Evans Graves and Charissa Monee and eight great grandchildren, Alma leaves to cherish her memories her children, brothers; Alvin, II and Anthony (Robin) Jacques, sisters; Dorothy (Harry,II) Perrault, Alva (Milton, Sr.) Morrison, Denise (Lloyd, Sr.) Johnston, Drs. Beverly (Ronald) Anderson, Darlene (Eric Sr.) Hutchison, and brothers-in-law; Henry Newman and former Octave Francis, II, one aunt Ercel (Harold) Romeaus, a host of nieces, nephews relatives and friends, a special thanks to Labertha M. Darenboury, Hazel Washington and Marva Cannon for comforting Alma during her convalesce. Alma was proceeded in death by two sisters; Betty J. Francis and Marianne J. Newman, one nephew Harry Perrault, III. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, the Cresent City Jewels social and pleasure club and NOTE Organization. The family appreciates the services rendered by doctors, nurses, therapists and caregivers; son Leroy Woodfork and daughter and son-in-law; Claudia and Russell Duffins. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 9, 2016, Bacote-Eddy Funeral Home, 209 Brocking Street from 5:00PM until 8:00PM, Reverends, Deacons, and parishioners of St. Anthony Parish Church, neighboring churches, relatives, friends and medical providers are invited to join the family in a mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, September 10, 2016, 11:00 AM, St. Anthony Catholic Church, 2536 Hoffmeyer Road, Florence, South Carolina, Rev. Jesuplrathop Narichette, Celebrant Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, 100 Cheroke Road, Florence, South Carolina. Arrangements Entrusted to Bacote-Eddy Funeral Home.
