Alphonse Roberts Jr.

Alphonse Roberts, Jr., 78, of Jefferson, Louisiana, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2014. He was born to the late Helen and Alphonse Roberts, Sr., January 30, 1935, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He resided in Independence, Louisiana, until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1954. He served in the U.S. Navy until 1984 when he retired with 30 years of active and inactive service. While in inactive service, he joined the New Orleans Parish Sheriff's Department in 1976 as a Deputy Sheriff. He retired from the Sheriff's Department in 1996 as a Lieutenant Watch Commander. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Joyce; five children: Alphonse III, Catharine, Alonzo, Sonya and Michelle, and spouses; siblings, Helen Louise (Bridges), Edward, Carlene (Washington), Bobbie Jean (Smith), and Clarence; grandchildren: Cindy, Brandon, Torionne, Sylverne', Dajah, Lorenzo Jr., Devine, Dacoda, Daya, Porsha, Leronca, Theda, and Emona; great-grandchildren: Cori, Demonte, and Natalya; and a host of nephews, nieces and in-laws. He is predeceased by his daughter, LaShawn, his brother, Shelton, and sister, Lovie D. (Neely). He was known for his great childhood stories, great cooking, crossword puzzles, his love of fishing, hunting, and gardening. He became a Jehovah's Witness in 2009. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather (PawPaw), and friend, who is deeply missed, and will never be forgotten. Services will be held Monday, February 3, 2014, at the Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard, New Orleans, Louisiana 70124. Visitation will start at 1:00 p.m. and the funeral at 2:00 p.m. A repast will follow at 3:00 p.m., at the American Lions Club, located at 2920 Arlington Avenue (and S.
