Mrs. Althea Pierce was the one of the most dedicated black Catholic i have ever met in my ministry in the USA. She ministered with joy when i was pastor at
Saint Paul the Apostle Church. We have lost a great minister, but we have also found a great saint! To Amos, Ron, and my friend Wendell who first drove me around New Orleans: may God's unfailing consolation be yours. May Althea and Stacey rest in God's peace until we join them. Amen!

I met Mrs. Pierce as a first grader at Mary D. Coghill Elem. School. She knew all of us "angels" by name. There was no such thing as acting up in her class. Then when I realized she also lived in Pontchartrain Park and I would see her on 'Mendez St' - either in passing or by Mrs. Drayton's house, my world as a child seemed to get smaller. But then I realized, Mrs. Pierce was just like any other neighbor making sure the children in the village were taken care of. I can now add her to my list of heavenly angels that keep watch over me. I am sorry for the loss of such a wonderful person.

I called her my "SECOND MOTHER" and I deeply regret that I was not there to share in her "Going Home Celebration" as I now reside in Cairo, Egypt. I just heard about her death a couple of minutes ago and my heart is sad. I am a member of St. Paul's church and I worked very closely with Mrs. Pierce when I served on the Bereavement Committee. I was in New Orleans this past summer and she and I exchanged our "BIG HUGS". I will miss hearing her say "Come give me my HUG". I will keep that memory close to my heart.
May she rest in peace.

My wife Elaine and I met Mrs. Pierce through my mother, Mrs. Evelyn Walton, who taught with her at Coghill. They became friends and extended that friendship long after retirement. Mrs. Pierce always welcomed Elaine and me with a warm greeting and that infectious smile. She would bring my mother okra from the country which we devoured happily. The last time I saw Mrs. Pierce we joked about something that Wendell had said (about The Help) and she asked about Elaine. To her husband Amos and her children, we want you to know that your mother was well loved and will be missed. She was and is a treasure that I know you will always cherish.

Wendell, my very deepst condolences on the loss of your mom, and EVERYBODY'S Coghill Elementary school teacher. I live in Chicago now, but about two years ago when I was in New Orleans, I stopped by to visit with your mom. We visited for about an hour and some change. She remembered me, because when we were going to Coghill, I didn't care for Ms Holliman, my sixth grade teacher, so everyday at sixth period, I would skip my class and go to your mom's class, and help grade papers and such. When I asked her why she allowed me to get away with that, she told me that I was a good girl, she like me, and didn't mind the help!!
I've been following your career as well, and I wish you the best, and may the Good Lord bless you and give you strength. Mrs. Pierce is a wonderful person and a great teacher, who will always be remembered.
Me, along with Wendell Johnson and our two children, Wendell, Jr. and Tynisha were all in Mrs. Pierce's class.
