Amos Pierce Obituary

Amos E. Pierce Jr. was born January 23, 1925 in New Orleans LA. to the late Amos E. Pierce, Sr. and Blanche Fronta Pierce and entered into eternal rest on November 29, 2023. He was preceded in death by his late wife of 60 years, Althea Lee Edwards Pierce, his eternal love. Affectionately known as "Pops", and "Uncle Amos", he married Althea on July 26, 1952 in College Point, LA. after meeting at Southern University A&M when he returned from war. To this union were born three sons: Stacey Anthony (deceased), Ron Paul and Wendell Edward. Amos E. Pierce, Jr. was the father-in-law of Dr. Debra DeFour Pierce and Erika Young. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Meghan, Logan, Janelle, and Natalie Pierce, along with his sister-in-law Maryann Edwards and a large number of nieces and nephews who he cared for as his own children. We thank his caregivers Wallace McGill, Jr., Aureila Crawford, Trenell Johnson, Don Aperwhite, Barbara Smith, Mary Jones, Kiantè Matthews and Herman Spencer who provided years of care and joy, becoming family in the final years of his life. After being drafted at the age of 17 during World War II, Amos E. Pierce Jr. was a member of the famous "Buffalo Soldiers," an attached unit of African Americans to the United States Marines valiantly serving with the 24th Infantry Regiment during the Battle of Saipan. After returning from war, he finished high school at Gaudet High School, attended Southern University A&M, and then moved to New York to study photography. Amos E. Pierce, Jr. was a proud resident of Pontchartrain Park, now recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, and a devoted parishioner of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church for over 70 years, where he was a member of the Knights of Peter Claver and 55 and Faster. He was a dedicated employee of the University of New Orleans retiring after 30 years of dedicated service. A devoted father, grandfather, husband, WWII veteran and proud American, his legacy and life we celebrate. Relatives, and friends of the family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 6828 Chef Menteur Hwy., New Orleans, LA 70126 on Saturday, December 16, 2023. Visitation at 9:00 am. Tributes and Eulogies at 9:30 am. Mass begins at 10:00 am. Arrangements by Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Avenue.
