Andrew Ciulla Obituary

Andrew J. Ciulla (Andy), 65, died June 30, 2011 at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier, California.
Andy was born in Los Angeles, California on March 31, 1946 to John and Lucille Ciulla. He grew up in Monterey Park, California with his parents and his sister JoAnn.
Andrew served in the United States Air Force, during Vietnam, then for many years he worked with his late father, building a family business. Andy was constantly working to better the lives of his beloved family.
After a long courtship, and although he was already deeply rooted in her family, he married his wife Charlene and her family truly became his own. Andrew's family was his heart and soul just as he was for them; he truly cherished his family and friends.
He was a valued member of Saint Bruno's Catholic Church and served as an usher.
Andrew is survived by his mother, Lucille Ciulla; his sister, JoAnn Fine and her family; his wife, Charlene Ciulla; four children, Gerald Roberts, Jeffrey Roberts, Michael Roberts, and Theresa Caravalho; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
At his family's request, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to the American Diabetes Association at the following web address:

Andy, I just want to say how much you are missed by our family. I don't pass by the Little League field without thinking of you and how you always took the team for Pizza after most of the games. Or, how whenever we all went to dinner you always wanted to pick up the tab. You were one of the most generous persons we have ever known. Your level temperament was such a great example to all the boys you mentored. We miss you Andy and look forward to the day that we are all together again.

Another day is almost gone. I've thought about you more than a hundred times since I saw you last, but I haven't sat down to write you a note, I'm sorry. The problem is that when I start thinking about what to write my throat aches and my eyes start to water. So instead of trying to write too much since the flood gates have already opened, I think I'll just tell you that I love and miss you.

The other day I happen to be in the area, so I passed by the 'original' OSI. I knew it would be emotional, and of course I started crying like a baby as soon as I saw it. It was definitely bitter sweet. So many memories there when we were younger, spending Saturdays with you working and John and I riding around on the forklifts in the warehouse (what were you thinking letting us do that?!). There's this huge gate in front of the drive way now, so you cant really see much (I was kind of disappointed.) Almost 2 years later, and its crazy the little things that bring back memories and make me start crying like a baby all over again. I guess it just shows what an amazing person you were.

Today I watched Endeavour take it's final flight from Edwards AFB. All I could think of was that back in the day you would have convinced me that the boys should miss school. You would have known the exact path to take to avoid traffic. You would have known the perfect spot to park to witness it's arrival. Made me think of the days laying on your windshield watching planes land at LAX. We would usually be munching on leftovers or smoked fish from Tonys on the pier. Felt like I could reach out and touch the planes as they came in.

I can't believe its been 1 year since we lost you, and yet it doesn't seem to get any easier. I keep thinking I'll go to grandmas one day and see you sitting there on the couch and realize it was all just a bad dream, not a day has gone by that I haven't thought of you. Even little things like driving by a Panera Bread reminds me of when we would go have lunch with grandma at Whittwood, or watching the Dodgers play the Giants at AT&T park in SF and not being able to come back and share it with you. Love you so much and miss you even more.
Brandi.

Happy Fathers day Andy. Wish I could pick up the phone and hear your voice. I could tell you how grateful I am that you came into my life and made me feel special. Then I would tell you how grateful I am that you made my boys life richer by loving them. You were an amazing Father and Grandfather.

I remember a trip I took with him to Washington to deliver some freight. I was about 10 at the time. I remember helping him back the truck into tight spots, directing him of course. I remember going to the top of the Space Needle with him and Mickey.
I remember going with him the the old warehouse on Flotilla. We'd get some food on the way, usually Lupe's. Hang out in the conference room or the bench in the warehouse eating together. Then he'd let me help him load some trucks.
I remember we'd go to the Auto Show together. He'd try and convince me why Ford was better than Chevy.
I remember him always trying to get me to read.
I remember at Christmas Eve. His job was to hand the gifts to the people Grandma would call out. We had our little thing where he'd wink when it was for me.
I remember laying on the front lawn with him and watching the airplanes flying overhead. He'd teach me the different types, and how to spot the differences. To this day I hate flying, but am so intrigued by planes because of him.
I remember the last baseball game he, my sister and I went to, Dodgers Vs. Giants, and how happy he was that we did that together. Of course the Giants won.
I remember being in the old Ranchero with him, on the way to OSI, or Grandmas, and I always thought my Papa was so cool because he could drive with his eyes closed for a short time. He would say, "I was just resting my eyes."
I miss the little things.
I love you and miss you so much Papa……

I think I've known of Andy almost all of my life. My mom worked with his mom and I worked with Charlene for such a long time. Once I discovered her Andy was my mom's friend's son, it was like an "aha" moment. I think both Andy and I had the same initial reaction "small world." When I ran across his obituary online, my jaw truly hit the floor .. it couldn't be "THAT ANDY" could it? Charlene, I'm so sorry for your loss but ever so grateful that Andy was such a wonderful part of your life for so many years. Though I had not seen either of you in way too long, I know that he truly must have been one of the nicest men I've ever met. I know he is watching over you. May he rest in peace.

I met Andy & Charlene in the 80's when I worked with Charlene. I believe they were not married at the time. Andy was always a kind considerate person. He was a wonderful husband to Charlene and father to her children. Andy was very helpful to me in my business helping me with shipping services. I moved out of the area and haven't seen Andy or Charlene for a number of years but I have many fond memories. God will take care of Andy now.

Thank you grandpa, thank you for being there for me, like jack said telling me what to order at phillipes, taking me to nickel nickel and buying me like, a hundred nickels, and the theatre to see tons of movies, and knowing I will eat good when I'm with you. I know you will be watching over me, you went way too soon papa.

Just a few hours ago the only person I knew as "grandpa" passed away. He was the perfect example of how a father, husband, grandfather, and friend should be. It's unfortunate that my own children will never truly know what a great guy he was. He was a perfect roll model in every way. I learned a lot from him and hope that I can pass this knowledge to my children. He passed away to young, I thought I had another 30 years with him. He's gone, but I will always remember him. I love you grandpa Andy

You were taken from us too soon papa. I wish I could have had 10 more minutes with you to thank you for all that you did for us. You did so much for me and my family, and were there for us during our most difficult times. I'm going to miss going to the street fair with you every wednesday afternoon, talking about planes, the airline business, and traveling, and just having you in my life. I love you and miss you always.

Andy, we love you and will miss you forever. You taught so many through your fine example of what it means to be a decent human being. Your soft spoken words, your kind hearted ways and your handsome smile all lent themselvs to making everyone want to be your friend. You were loved by everyone and everyone realized your love for them. Thank you for being Danny's baseball coach and for teaching him life long lessons. We will never forget you!!!

I met Andy and Charlene in the 90's regarding business matters but soon came to recognize what a great guy Andy was and what a great wife he had. Throughout tough times he never waivered and always had time to be concerned about everyone else. A rare gentleman in today's world.

Always thoughtful, generous, and kind there are no words to truly express the loss to our family. We will miss your chuckle, your playful nature, the hysterical random cravings to a distant restaurant, and especially the time we have lost. Thank you for all of my wonderful memories. I miss you already and will love you forever.
