Andrew Gay Obituary

Andrew Price Gay was born on St. Louis Plantation near Plaquemine, LA on August 21, 1917. He died on Saturday, August 31, 2002 in Baton Rouge, LA at the age of 85. He was educated privately and in the public schools and graduated from Sewanee Military Academy. He attended Tulane University for four years in the School of Commerce and left to join the United States Field Artillery at the beginning of World War II. He served as an officer in the European Theatre of Operations. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge under General George Patton and received five battle stars and the Bronze Star. He is married to the former Nancy Dicks of New Orleans, LA and they are the parents of four children and grandparents of seven. He has served for the past forty-five years as the president and general manager of the Edward J. Gay Planting and Manufacturing Company of Plaquemine. He served for many years on the Executive Committee of the American Sugar Cane League of which he is a past president. He was King Sucrose XXV. He served on the Iberville Parish Police Jury for 20 years. He sat on the Board of the Citizens Bank and Trust Co. of Plaquemine for many years, and that of the Lower Delta Soil and Water Conservation. He serves on the Vestry of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion, Plaquemine. He is a past member of the Plaquemine Rotary Club and a past president. He served as a member of the Democratic State Central Committee. He serves as Chairman of the Plaquemine Protestant Cemetery Committee. He served on the Atchafalaya Levee Board. Survived by: wife, Nancy Dick Gay of Plaquemine, LA; sons: Andrew Price Gay, Jr. of New Roads, LA and John Fleming Gay of Plaquemine, LA; daughters: Nancy Gay See of Atlanta, GA and Barbara Gay Rice of Covington, LA; 7 grandchilden; sister, Gladys Gay Lebreton, New Orleans, LA; brother, Edward J. Gay, Jr. of Baton Rouge, LA. Visitation will be Monday, September 2, 2002 - 9:00 a.m. until time of Religious Service at 11:00 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion, Plaquemine, LA. Conducted by the Rev. Charles Wood. Interment in the Protestant Cemetery. WILBERT FUNERAL HOME in charge of arrangements.
