Barbara Kuper Obituary

Barbara Caruso Kuper, 65, died peacefully at her home in Slidell on Sunday, May 8, 2016. Barbara is predeceased by her parents, Frank S. and Josephine D. Vitale Caruso, and her sister, Angela Caruso Campagna. She is survived by her beloved husband Philip, stepson Forrest, brothers Salvatore "Sam" (Martha) Caruso, Peter (Cindy) Caruso, brother-in-law Ronald F. Campagna, nieces & nephews Mary Martha (Robb) Melancon, Kristine (Christopher) Black, Salvatore "Sammy" (Anna) Caruso Jr. and Ronald T. Campagna. Barbara graduated from St. Mary's Dominican High School and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Nursing from LSU Medical Center, School of Nursing. She was an RN for 43 years, and worked in nearly every clinical aspect of nursing at one time or another. She worked at Riveroaks, New Orleans VA, and Touro Infirmary. She was on the faculty at LSUMC School of Nursing for 20 years, and a Hospice nurse for seven years prior to her illness. She held numerous additional credentials, and was a Nationally Certified Bereavement Facilitator. Barbara was a member of The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International. She received the first Allen A. Copping Excellence in Teaching award from the School of Nursing; the Dr. Ernst Lederle Award for Excellence in Research, Education and Patient Care; the Northshore District Nurses Association Nursing Excellence Award; the Outstanding Clinical Practice Award, Touro Infirmary; and the Dedication to Lupus Patients Award. She was trained as an End-of-Life Nursing Educator through an award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. She was included in the 100 Great Nurses. Nursing was not just a profession to Barbara; it was her calling-in her DNA. She will be fondly remembered as the wonderful nurse who took care of both her patients and their families; perceptive in assessment, tenacious and determined, diligent in treatment, with a wonderful depth of compassion that did not wane with the years. She believed a vital part of nursing was to serve as an advocate and she was fully committed to this role. Throughout Barbara's life and career, she touched the lives of many, including her patients, students, colleagues, family, and friends. Family and friends are invited to attend Memorial services, one of which will be held on Saturday, May 21 at St Genevieve Church in Slidell (58203 Hwy 433, Slidell - visitation and remembrances 9:00-11:00, Mass at 11:00, followed by reception). A second service will be held on Saturday June 11, at the Lutheran Church of the Pines in Waveland, MS (309 Hwy 90, Waveland - visitation 10:00, service at 11:00, reception to follow). I can’t believe it’s been 8 years since you went to your home in heaven. I remember when you came to me during a meeting and said you had a swollen nodule in your neck and felt a little off. 3 days later you were in the hospital getting an unimaginable diagnosis of cancer. You gave it everything you had to get well but God needed you back. I have so many good memories with you and I wish we had more time to make more. You are My inspiration forever!

I still cannot believe that you became ill and then called to heaven,Barbara!
You brought so much to this world and God just rewarded you earlier than expected. Thank you for teaching us how to be better people, better nurses, better educators. I have been teaching nursing now for a few years just as you did for so long. I´m sure your students are excellent nurses because of the knowledge you gave them. You will always be my inspiration. I love and miss you!

Thinking of you today, Barbara. Not just today but so often through out the year. You are and always will be in my heart. I am teaching nursing now and often think if I am doing it as you would. I think you are still my inspiration and mentor. When we meet in heaven I´m sure you will let me know! We started as co- workers but will always be friends.

The day Barbara walked into my office to interview for a job with Lakeshore Hospice is a blessed day. How fortunate was I and the entire company to have Barbara Kuper work with us! She would have been an asset anywhere in the medical field and she chose to join the Lakeshore team! From there she graced us and her patients with her hopspice heart and nursing knowledge. Barbara made everyone feel so special. She was the special one. I'll miss her so much but feel truly blessed to have had her in my life and now in my heart forever.

I grew up on General Pershing Street in the '50s and '60s. Barbara's family lived across the street. My sister, my cousin, Barbara and I were good friends. I remember her taping buttons to her cheeks, hoping that she would get dimples! Rest in peace.

Steady. Calm. Reassuring. Loving. Just a few words that describe Aunt Barbara. She was always upbeat. She always had a smile. She called everybody "Boo" and nobody minded. Working in healthcare the past twenty years, I long ago lost count of the nurses whom Barbara had taught and upon whom she left a lasting impression. We will miss her smile and laugh at the family table throughout the years.

Years ago I worked with Barbara in the ER at Touro. She was always there with a smile and a positive attitude that permeated the rest of the staff on her shift. She was a pleasure to work with and I know she will be sadly missed by family and friends. Rest in Peace Barbara, you earned your reward.

Mrs. Kuper was my very first academic mentor at LSUHSC School of Nursing back in 2006. She was regarded with great respect by her students, colleagues, and most of all - me. She has left a lasting impression upon me and is often my frame of reference for Coordinating the Critical Care course to this day. She is an excellent legacy for the nursing profession and our School of Nursing. I wish the family much comfort in knowing her labor on Earth is now complete as she now rightfully receives her reward in Heaven of eternal rest, and eternal peace.

By far one of the best nurses I've ever had the pleasure of working with. You were kind, compassionate and intelligent. You had a huge hospice heart! You were a beautiful lady inside and out. I'm so thankful The Lord let me cross paths with you Barb. Until we meet again. I will keep your family in my prayers.

I spent many years working with Barbara in the hospice setting. She was a true hospice nurse that was very caring and sincere in her role. Such a sweet soul that touched not only the lives of her patients and families, but the lives of all of us that were privileged to call her a friend. She was always there for me and would always check on her "winnieboo". I am going to miss her very much. She always gave me words of wisdom when I needed them the most. Praying for all who loved her, may she rest in God's everlasting peace. <3

I will never forget Barbara...she truly was one of the best nurses I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Even when she should have been focused on herself, she always thought to ask about my son & encourage me to continue my education. She touched my life & I will continue to strive to be like her. She will be greatly missed!

I absolutely loved working with Barbara. She was sweet, smart, and so kind. She had Keeva and Phil come to the forensic nursing class that I taught at LSUHSC School of Nursing. Phil and family, I hope your hearts cherish all of the wonderful memories you had. Barbara will be in heaven taking charge of some great project. I really admired her. Best wishes to you during your tremendous loss.

Barbara's passing is truly a loss to nursing and humanity. We worked together at LSUHSC School of Nursing where she was my mentor early on. She steered me well as I learned the ropes. Her genuine kindness and gentle soul, along with high standards, were hallmarks of her approach with co-workers and students. She will be missed.

I didn't believe in Angels until I met Barbara. Barbara was a hospice nurse who took care of my wife Joy during her illness. Barbara called Joy her "girlie". She is a most beautiful, beautiful person. I will never forget her. The world is certainly at a loss with her passing. Phillip, my sincere condolences. Barbara, have a beautiful trip to the other side. Bless you

I never met Barbara personally; she was a dear friend of my sister, Sue Ferguson, who passed away last November after a six-month battle with cancer. Even though Barb was going through her own similar battle, she was there for my sister every day, offering love, guidance, insights, and emotional support in so many ways. Her middle of the night text messages to my sister when they were both unable to sleep and feeling unsettled, were so comforting. Barb's love meant so much to my sister and, in turn, to me. Barb was a loving, caring, nurturing, amazing woman. It's difficult to understand why our angels that are here on earth are taken from us too soon. Condolences and heart-felt sympathies to her family, particularly her beloved Philip.
