Betty Lou Hite, 92, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on November 17, 2017. She was the youngest of six children born to Leo and Alma Glab in Etna, PA. After graduating from Allegheny High School, Betty moved to Baltimore, MD, where she worked as a legal transcriptionist. While working as a medical secretary for the Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins Medical Center, she met her future husband through a mutual friend. They were married in 1956 and moved to Jacksonville, FL, where Stephen Hite, DVM, opened the Blanding Blvd. Animal Hospital. He practiced veterinary medicine for 50 years. Betty often helped as a receptionist in the animal hospital until 2008 when they retired.
Betty was totally devoted to her family throughout her life. She also enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading, finding estate sale treasures, and restoring antiques. She had a quick wit, an engaging smile, and a great sense of style.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years, Dr. Stephen C. Hite; her children, Susan White (Quinton) of Jacksonville, Carolyn Gause (Richard) of Gainesville, FL, Stephen Hite, Jr. (Hilda) of Jacksonville, as well as four grandchildren, Quinton White, III. (Lane), Stephanie White, Garrett White, and Elizabeth Gause; one great grandson, Albert White, her beloved older sister, Alma Chaffon and several nieces and nephews. She will be beautifully remembered by all of us.
A Memorial Service to honor her life will be held in the Chapel of Southside United Methodist Church, 3120 Hendricks Ave. Jacksonville, FL 32207 on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow at the church.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32257.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin, 11801 San Jose Blvd. Jacksonville, FL 32223, www.hgmandarin.com, 904-288-0025.

"Uncle" Steve, Susan, Carolyn and Steve, Jr. - I am so sorry for your loss. Your Mom was so great to our family over the decades we brought various pets to your office and enjoyed time with you all! She was the warmest, kindest and funniest receptionist ever! She always made it feel like a family visit. Your care for our family and extended four-footed family over the years, has been a treasure. (You're probably the reason we still rescue cats.) Know she's made a positive difference in the many lives she touched, you all have. Thank you for your many kindnesses. Our warmest thoughts and prayers are with you. Sincerely,
