C.C. Haydel Obituary

Dr. C.C. Haydel, Jr., simply "C.C." or "Dr. C" to all who knew him, a beloved pediatrician and selfless community servant, died Thursday, September 7, 2017. Clarence Clement Haydel, Jr., was born on October 16, 1936 at Flint-Goodridge Hospital, the third child and first son of Dr. C.C. Haydel, Sr. and Eudora Arnaud Haydel. C.C. Haydel, Jr., grew up on North Miro Street in the 7th Ward of New Orleans, attended Corpus Christi Elementary School and graduated from Xavier University Preparatory School in 1954 where he was active in the Drama Club, the Chorus and wrote for the student newspaper. He attended Cornell University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Xavier University of Louisiana in 1958. At Xavier University, he was a member of the Drama Club, the German Club and Student Government. He earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from Howard University College of Medicine in 1964. Dr. Haydel, Jr., completed his medical internship in pediatrics at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1965. After completing his internship, he was called to active duty as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps. He served 15 months as staff pediatrician at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton, California where he assisted in developing the Navy's first Adolescent Care Clinic to treat the families of Naval personnel. He was later assigned to the USS Galveston, a guided missile cruiser, where he was head of the ship's medical department during an 8-month Mediterranean tour of service. Following Dr. Haydel's honorable discharge as a captain from active duty with the U.S. Navy in 1967, he began his residency in pediatrics at Tulane in New Orleans. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Haydel began a private practice in pediatrics and became a clinical instructor in the Department of Community Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine, and served in that capacity until 1994. Dr. Haydel also served as clinical instructor at Tulane's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine from 1970-1977. Dr. Haydel served his community as a physician in numerous other capacities, including as a regional consultant to Project Head Start; medical director of the Parent Child Development Center and as a pediatric examiner for the Orleans Parish Schools and the Jefferson Parish Sexual Abuse Unit. As medical director of Medical Care Center of Louisiana, Dr. Haydel in 1974 led an innovative experimental program to expand access to quality, affordable healthcare and preventative medical care for low and moderate income families through a nominal pre-payment arrangement. The program was a huge success with an 86 percent increase in patients served from its first to second year, many of whom had never seen a doctor before enrolling. He served on the Boards of Directors of the New Orleans Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation and the Diabetes Association of Greater New Orleans. As a community leader, Dr. Haydel served on the Board of Directors of the Children's Bureau of New Orleans, the Advisory Board of Liberty Bank & Trust. Co., the Board of Directors of United Federal Savings & Loan Association, and as a member of the Audubon Park Commission. Dr. Haydel was a member of several professional associations, including the National Medical Association, New Orleans Pediatric Society, the New Orleans Medical Association, the Louisiana Medical Association, the Orleans Parish Medical Society and the Louisiana State Medical Society. Dr. Haydel was active in the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the Alpha Alpha Chapter of the Sigma Pi Phi BOULE Fraternity, the Bunch Club and the Staggs, Ltd. Dr. Haydel's gentle manner, engaging personality and commitment to their physical and spiritual well-being endeared him to generations of young patients and their parents. His decades of noble service and consistent devotion to improving the lives of others earned him universal respect across the community. His dedication and love for his family and friends shall be eternally admired by all who knew him. Dr. Haydel was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. C.C. Haydel Sr., and Eudora Arnaud Haydel, and a sister Jean Clayre Haydel. Dr. Haydel, Jr. is survived by his beloved childhood sweetheart and dear wife of 55 years, Iris Labostrie Haydel. Three children also survive him: C.C. Haydel, III, (Yoko) of Japan, Christopher Jude Haydel (Pilar) of Pasadena, California, and Cheryl Lynn Haydel LaBarre (James) of Baltimore, Maryland. He is also survived by a sister, Sybil Haydel Morial and a brother Glenn Arnaud Haydel (Lillian), in addition to four grandchildren Aaron Christopher, Seth Ryan, and Santiago Mandela Haydel and Lily Hiyama Haydel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 15, 2017, at 12 noon at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 3368 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans.
