Carolyn Peters

1937 - 2022

Carolyn L. Peters entered into this world on Monday, October 18, 1937. She was the eldest of five children born to the union of the late Alfred G Peters and Bernice Schexnayder Peters in Wallace, Louisiana. Carolyn was a dedicated mother who taught her children the importance of putting God and Family first. She always put the needs of her children, as well as many others, before her own. She was an excellent cook and often prepared several meals at once for the family to ensure that everyone was more than satisfied. She was a devout Catholic and attended Holy Ghost Catholic School and Xavier Preparatory School in New Orleans. She always lived her life led by faith and frequently attended novenas, special church services, prayed the Rosary regularly and had several pairs of rosary beads that she often gave away. She always kept her Family lifted in prayer. Throughout the 1990s, Carolyn taught at a Head Start Center in New Orleans. Her fondest memories were teaching the children how to plant seeds, outdoors and indoors, and the time when a coworker brought baby chickens and a rabbit for the kids to see. She also loved being a part of the neighborhood and was an active member of the Freret Neighborhood Association, the Freret-Milan Property Campaign, the Freret Street Market Festival, and a proud graduate of the Neighborhood Development Foundation Homebuyer Training program. Carolyn was a shopper! She loved grocery shopping and especially loved bargain shopping! She was a fixture at many of the local grocery stores and would frequent them on an almost-daily basis. No matter where she shopped, she always picked up something extra for Family and Friends. Even when she worked in her later years as a store clerk at the Bloomindeals Thrift Store, she made sure she set aside her most treasured finds for everyone and would be sure to reach out to let you know of the latest deal she found for you and would be so kind as to get it for you! That was typical Carolyn - she may have not had much to give but she was always willing to share. Carolyn leaves to cherish her memory her daughters Cheryl Peters McCray and Darlene Peters, and sons Merlin Peters, Gary Peters, Sr. (Wife Darleene), Eric Peters, Sr., and Hans Peters. She also leaves a surviving sister, Mary P. Hurst. Carolyn "Nanaw" left a legacy of 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other friends and loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Alfred Peters, and sisters Faye Peters Bush and Joan "Ann" Peters St. Martin, and eldest son, Darren Anthony Wright. Carolyn was truly loved and will be deeply missed by all. She left indelible memories for all who knew her, and she will always remain in our hearts. May she rest in the continued peace of God's loving arms. Relatives and Friends of the Family are invited to attend a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at St. Katherine Drexel Catholic Church, 2015 Louisiana Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70115, on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at 10:00a.m. Visitation begins at 9:00a.m. Interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 4000 Norman Mayer Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70122.
