Carroll Smith Obituary

SMITH Carroll Purvis Smith passed away on Friday, April 16, 2010 at age 63 after a long and courageous battle with heart disease and complications from several strokes suffered since 2000. He was a career oil field sales and service provider specializing in rental equipment, tools and testing services. He worked the oil fields in Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. Carroll was born in July 1946 in Brookhaven, Mississippi where he and seven siblings grew up; he attended Loyd Star High School and Copiah Lincoln Junior College. He was a member of the 1963 Loyd Star State Championship Basketball team. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Candis Loreen Smith, a daughter, Shanna Lynette Stout and her spouse, Alan Kirk Stout, a son, Chad Carroll Smith of Houston, TX, a stepson, Brandon Dale Rush of New York and five grandchildren: Caroline Elizabeth Stout, Evan Ross Stout, Catherine Anne Stout, Madeline Grace Stout, and Carli Rose Smith all of Houston. He is also survived by his siblings: John B. Smith, Veta Covington and Bonita Bullock of Brookhaven, MS, Mike Smith of College Station, TX, and Valerie Hill of Baton Rouge, LA. He was preceded in death by brothers: Larry and Charles Smith, both of Brookhaven. Carroll was an avid sports fan who loved watching football, basketball, and baseball and spent many afternoons occupying his favorite place known as Carroll's Corner to watch or listen to the broadcast of a game, but was even fonder of attending in person. He favored fishing and golf for his leisure time and had many stories to tell anyone who would listen. He served in the Army National Guard. Carroll will be missed, but not forgotten. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 24, at 1:00 pm with a preceding visitation at 12:00 noon at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Brookhaven, MS. A second memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, April 25 at 1:00 pm, at Lake Lawn Cemetery All Saints Mausoleum in New Orleans, LA where he will be interred. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the American Heart Association on the Carroll P. Smith memorial webpage.

I will always remember when Carroll gave us his Captain's bedroom furniture. He was moving out of his apartment in Lafayette and didn't really need it any more. I drove up to Lafayette 2 weekends in a row, to pick up the two dressers and headboard. He told me "just leave me something to put my clothes in." i had taken all his bedroom furniture before he moved completely out. He probably put his clothes in a cardboard box, so I could take the dressers. That's how he was: generous and funny. We will miss him.

Uncle Carroll will always hold a very special place in my heart. Throughout my childhood, I always loved to see him. He absolutely lit up the room when he walked in with his big grin and that great laugh! He always had a way of making me feel special and loved. He was and always will be one of my most favorite people. I think that God needed a little more laughter in Heaven and Daddy and Uncle Charles needed another fishing buddy. I will never forget you Uncle Carroll. You will truly be missed.

Memories of Uncle Carroll, An 8 year old little girl who's new permanent teeth were too big for her face and being told they were beautiful teeth and so was I. Singing along to Eric Burton and the Animals. I thought he was the coolest ever. The time he drove to visit me as a newlywed with a beagle puppy in his lap and a pile of empty KFC boxes in the back seat.Cecil and I still laugh about that.He made an impression on my life and I will always love him. What a very special man Uncle Carroll was...His smile was radiant and magnetic. Whenever the family was in Uncle Carroll's presence, we always knew we were loved. We always waited impatiently for Uncle Carroll, daddy, Uncle Larry and the rest of the brothers and Charlie to come home from Deer Park wih another "Great Fishing Story", to hear about the big one that got away, how many fish they caught or who fell out of the boat this time. Uncle Carroll you will be greatly missed. Kathy Ann, Charlie and Aunt Louise

The "Uncle C" I remember was larger than life and he certainly lived life to the fullest! He was always busy with work or projects around the house. If he was awake then he was up and doing. He loved people and loved to entertain. Whether a fish fry, a barbeque, or a formal dinner; you and he were ever gracious, generous hosts who welcomed all who entered your home. He will be missed. Bless you, Candi.
