Charles Matthews Obituary

Charles Richard Matthews departed this life on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at around 8 pm. Mr. Matthews was born on November 11, 1951 in New Orleans, LA to the late John W. Sr. and Celestine Garrett Matthews. He grew up in a strong Christian home and at a young age, gave his life to the Lord. Charles was baptized at the Second Free Mission Baptist Church in New Orleans, LA under the late Rev. Peter B. Fortner. At the request of his parents, he joined St. Marks 4th Baptist Church under the ministry of the late Rev. Edward Thompson on or about June 1961. Charles attended Warren Easton and McDonogh #35 High School, later enlisting in the U.S. Army, where he was deployed to Germany. Upon returning home he had multiple careers in the home construction industry, auto mechanic and plumbing. Charles was extremely intelligent and very well rounded with his hands. For the past eight years he resided in Waveland / Bay St. Louis, MS in the birth hometown of his mother. In recent years he joined his mother's family church Mount Zion Baptist Church in Waveland, MS. He was an extremely devoted brother, uncle, cousin and friend. Having given completely of himself to God's command, he crossed the beautiful azure river of life into eternal skies of heavenly blessings, leaving memories of good deeds in the hearts of his cherished survivors, sister, Dr. Lisa M. Matthews-Moore and two lovely children, Charlisa and Charles "BJ" Moore whom he embraced as his very own adopted; God-children; five brothers, John W. Jr., Norbert R., Byron G., Eric J. and Mark A. Matthews. Also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and great-nephews, other relatives and friends. A Celebration service honoring the life and legacy of the late Mr. Charles Richard Matthews will be held at St. Mark's Fourth Baptist Church, 2130 Perdido Street, New Orleans, LA 70112 on Friday, August 5, 2022 at 9 am. Interment Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, Slidell, LA 70460 following re-pass at St Mark's Fourth Baptist Church (lower auditorium). All family, friends, VA and Touro Hospitals are all invited to celebrate his home going.
