Christian R. Ansel Jr.

Christian R. Ansel, Jr., age 91, passed away after a brief illness on December 9, 2023, in Switzerland. He was a native of New Orleans, but resided in Thalwil, Switzerland since 2006. He graduated from St. Aloysius High School and received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Tulane University. He was employed as an engineer by companies in the U.S. and in France. In 1966, Chris returned to New Orleans as a manager of Galatoire's Restaurant to fill the vacancy left by the death of his father. In 1973, Chris opened Christian's Restaurant in Metairie, along with his friend, Henry Bergeron, Jr. He realized Metairie was not where the restaurant should be located. So, in 1977, they purchased and renovated a former Lutheran church on Iberville Street. Christian's restaurant became well-known and well-loved for its French Creole menu. The restaurant received multiple culinary awards, as well as architectural recognition. Chris retired from Christian's in 1997. Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Chris R. Ansel, Sr. and Laurence "Lola" G. Ansel; his grandparents, Justin L. Galatoire, Clarisse H. Galatoire, Capt. John C. Ansel, and Paula P. Ansel. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Sonja B. Ansel; his brother, Justin J. Ansel, DDS, and wife Sally B. Ansel; his sister, Clarisse A. Krauss, wife of the late Dennis P. Krauss; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A private memorial will be held. Donations may be sent in memory of Chris to a charity of your choice.
