Climon Smith Obituary

On June 26, 2018 at the age of 99, Rev. Dr. Climon James Smith II passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Rev. Dr. Smith relocated to New Orleans from Garyville, LA at the age of 5. He graduated from John McDonough #35, class of 1935. He was a member of the Second Zion B.C. Rev. Dr. Smith expressed his love for Christ through music. He began singing bass with the Second Zion Wonder Quartet, which later became known throughout the city as "The Heavenly Gates." He preached his first sermon in 1954 and was ordained by the 1st District Baptist Association in 1960. Rev. Dr. Smith married Thelma Reese in1950. He brought to their union, Climon and Vandolph Smith (mother, Georgia). He was the proud father of six sons and one daughter. Over the course of several years, Rev. Dr. Smith became a member of several notable associations. In the 1950's he served as the Master of Ceremony in the Carnation Social and Pleasure Club; the founding president of the Research Missionary Baptist and Educational Association; the Grand Chancellor of the King of Knights of Pythias. He was also a dedicated member of the 1st District Baptist Association, Freedom Association, Ideal Baptist Association, and Westside Association, to name a few. He also served as Chaplin for several years and officially retired in 2009. Rev. Dr. Smith was dedicated to fighting injustices in his community, however, his family was his true devotion and passion. To cherish his memory, he leaves behind 7 children: Climon III (Betty), Vandolph (Yvonne), Leary (Antoinette), Gregory (Gayla), Malcolm (Marsha), Sheila, and Lyndon (Angela). Twenty-six grandchildren and fifty great-grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his parents and his wife, Thelma Smith. Rev. Dr. Smith is survived by a host of other relatives and friends. He was a pillar in his community and will be truly missed by all. Relatives and friends of the family, also Pastors, Officers and Members of Second Zion Missionary Church are invited to attend a Funeral Service at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 6, 2018. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. Interment: Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Arrangements by D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home. Please visit www.rhodesfuneral.com to share online condolences.
