Father David Leftwich

David Leftwich Obituary

LEFTWICH Father David Leftwich, O.S.B., monk of the Abbey of Jesus Christ Crucified, Esquipulas, Chiquimula, Guatemala, died peacefully in Hospital Nuestra Senora del Pilar in Guatemala City, Guatemala on Saturday, February 10, 2007, the Feast of St. Scholastica. He had entered the hospital with a hemorrhage to the brain. Surgical procedures were performed to correct the problem. He died of pneumonia. He was 66 years old. Son of the late Robert Charles Leftwich, Sr. and Elsie Kohler Leftwich, Father David was born in New Orleans on October 8,1940. He attended St. Joseph Seminary and entered St. Joseph Abbey in 1960 and made his profession of vows as a Benedictine monk on August 25, 1961. He was ordained priest on May 28, 1966. In 1977 he went to Guatemala and later transferred his vows to the Abbey of Jesus Christ Crucified. Father David's sister, Lurline Leftwich Chaney of Covington, Louisiana, and he has nieces and a nephew. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Abbey on Saturday, April 14 at 11:15 A.M.

I went to grammar school with Robert at St Rita's on Lowerline Street. The old gang at St Rita's is thinning out. They will be missed. I will try to attend the Memorial at St. Ben's Saturday.

I first met Lefty in the summer of 1958 when he was a counselor at Cabrini Day camp. That was the fall of that year that I went to St Ben's as a second year special. More recently I enjoyed visiting with him the last time he was at the Abbey. He really was a great person to know and I will always remeber his big smile. My condolences to his family.

Sorry to do this so impersonally. I was in the seminary with David. I remember him as a very intellectual, funny young man. Our class will certainly miss seeing him, although infrequently. Rest in peace, good Father David.
