Donald Heumann Obituary

Oct. 22, 1950-July 11, 2022 - The most loving husband, dad, and 'Grumps'…Cricket's love and sense of humor did not come to an end with his death. 'Cricket' (Donald Oscar Heumann, Jr.) passed away on July 11, 2022 at the age of 71 after surviving a liver transplant, courageously battling cancer, and kidney failure. Earlier that day, he enjoyed time at home with his wife, Ann, two children, 'Hunter' (Donald O. Heumann III) and Heidi Heumann Saporito, his favorite daughter-in-law and son-in-law, Maggie Heumann and Chris Saporito…along with his three adored grandchildren, Parker Ann Saporito, Barrett Saporito, and his namesake, baby Cricket Heumann. His dog, Tootsie, was at his side. Later that day, he enjoyed a visit with Fr. Tim receiving communion and the Anointing of the Sick. He died peacefully surrounded by Ann and his children. They will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest. Cricket received his Bachelor's Degree from Loyola University in New Orleans. His career took a different path-following in the footsteps of his father and mother, Donald O. Heumann and Shirley Moskau Heumann. He became a horticulturist and florist at Donald O. Heumann Greenhouses and Rohm's Floral Designs, Ltd. Cricket quickly became the go-to florist, handling events throughout the city. His philanthropy included the Nature Center, Audubon Zoo, New Orleans Museum of Art, serving the New Orleans Mission, and many more. He served on many boards, including the Louisiana Nature Center and Friends of City Park. He had friends of every age and walk of life. The simplest pleasures brought him great joy, particularly time spent with family and friends. Cricket was an avid fisherman and hunter – these life-long loves he passed along to both his children and wife. Their favorite memories are times spent together on the water or hunting with Cricket. Cricket is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, sister, Donna H. Flandry, brother, Kurt P. Heumann, brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and so many loving friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at St. Catherine of Siena Church 105 Bonnabel Blvd. Metairie on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at 12:00 pm. Visitation will be at the church from 11:00am until Mass time. Interment will be private. The family requests that those who wish to express sympathy consider making donations to the following: Luis A. Balart, MD Memorial Fund, c/o Tulane Gastroenterology Department, 1430 Tulane Ave. SL35 New Orleans, LA 70112. Cricket was a neighbor and friend for over 30 years. We enjoyed those many years with him and Annie and the children, Hunter and Heidie, as wonderful neighbors and friends. He was a unique individual and a wonderful conversationalist. Kay and I will miss him greatly, but we will continue to stay active with Annie. Lord bless the whole Heuman family.

Dear Ann and your beautiful family,
Just knowing Cricket was a blessing. He never said no, and I asked so many times. But his generosity and goodness knew no bounds. I will miss his smile and kindness and treasure every moment I spent with him and with y'all at fundraisers and at games with our children. You are in my prayers, thoughts and heart.

I feel a deep loss of a friend, especially as his passing came on my birthday. You see Cricket is the only friend who went to grammar school (Holy Name), high. School ( de La Salle) and college (Loyola) with me. He always had that gentle smile under his trademark mustache. He was also the email King. There were many of us who received his stream of emails daily, be they educational, political or most often humorous. Getting his email was like saying hello without being there. Rest well my friend. You´ve brought joy to many.

I lived across Cherokee St from Cricket for a number of years when we were very young (photo attached)
We've stayed friends for all of these years and had lunch with the Friday group not that long ago. Always a big smile and truly glad to see you Cricket will be greatly missed. Chris Cole
