Donald Arthur Melchert, Jr., 71, a long-time resident of Kenner, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Lois. He was a beloved husband of 36 years to his bride, Kit. Devoted stepfather to Stephanie (Doug) and Becky "Boo" (Sean). Loving "Papa" to Emily and Andrew and "Panka" to Jack, Lily, and Owen. Dear brother to David and Kristina. He will also be missed by his dog Beauregard "Beau." Don was born on May 29, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan. He received his Bachelor of Science in Forestry from Michigan State University in 1975. He continued his education at Michigan State University, receiving an additional Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1977. His engineering career started at Dupont, where he was a loyal employee for 38 years. Dupont was later acquired by Denka Performance Elastomer, where he continued his role as a senior project engineer for another seven years before retiring in 2022. Don was a man of faith who served as an Elder at John Calvin Presbyterian Church and was a member of several committees. He loved the color green and all things related to the Michigan State Spartans. He was also a loyal Detroit Red Wings fan, loved fishing with friends, and enjoyed many years as a season ticket holder at the theater. Don found true happiness in traveling the world with his bride and exploring new experiences together. Don never met a stranger, and his infectious positivity could brighten anyone's mood. If you struck up a conversation with him, you were bound to hear him bragging about his grandchildren and how proud he was of them. Please join us for a celebration of life service on Saturday, June 1st, 2024, at John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Metairie, Louisiana. Visitation starts at 3 pm, followed by the service at 4 pm.
