Dorothy Goldstein Obituary

GOLDSTEIN Dorothy Blitz Goldstein, age 93 years, died on Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. at her New Orleans residence. Wife of the late Harry Goldstein. Beloved mother of Sanford L. Goldstein and wife Renee, and Warren A. Goldstein. Sister of the late Dr. Oscar Blitz, Fay Goldstein and Ida Blitz. Daughter of the late Lena Kancher and Abraham Blitz. Grandmother of Harris Reid Goldstein. Aunt of Dr. Roger Blitz, Dr. Seymour Pomerantz, Mimi Schlenker and Shirley Cooper. Also survived by great nieces and nephews. Mrs. Goldstein was a native and lifelong resident of New Orleans and a graduate of Sophie B. Wright Senior High School. She was a retired retailer. She was affectionately known as "Ms. Barry" by generations of customers at Barry's "Red Goose" Shoe Store. As a young girl, she performed as a singer and dancer, entertaining the elderly at homes for the aged and geriatric facilities in local hospitals. She was known as "Four feet of personality", and her dance group performed at the opening of the Saenger Theatre at its grand opening in 1927. Prior to her marriage, she was involved in children's welfare at her employment by Council of Social Agencies. She was also a World War II Red Cross volunteer, and co-established several endowment funds with the Jewish Children's Regional Service. Graveside services for Mrs. Goldstein will be held on Friday, December 19, 2008 at 2:00 PM from Anshe Sfard Cemetery, 4400 Elysian Fields Ave. at Tuscany Street, with Rabbi Yosie Nemes and Rabbi Robert Loewy officiating. Kindly omit flowers. Memorials in her memory as suggested to Jewish Children's Regional Service, 3500 N. Causeway Blvd., Metairie, LA 70002. Sandy. Renee, Harris and Warren, I was sorry to learn of the passing of your mom and grandmother. She was such a lovely woman and I know that she thought nice things of me as well as a lot of other people that she knew. I am sorry that I cannot attend the service tomorrow but my thoughts and prayer will be with you. Take care.
