TO MY COUSINS, LYDIA AND MELVIN AND THE ARROYO FAMILY:
My deepest condolences during this sad time.
Because my Dad’s job, took him away from New Orleans, our visits and phone calls to NOLA were few and far between. Having grown up without my grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins living close to us, time spent with family was very special. Even though I had been to NOLA at a young age, my very first memory of my cousin, Eddie, was the Arroyo family trip to Miami in the late 1950's. I remember having such a good time with my cousins, especially Eddie, since he was closest to my age. I saw Eddie during one of my two trips to NOLA for Mardi Gras 1970 and 1971. I remember Eddie going out of his way to visit my Dad, his Uncle Al, during Ed’s scuba trip to the Keys in the late 1970's. I didn’t live close to my parent's home, but Eddie called me later that day and we talked for quite some time, as Aunt Hazel would say “chewing the fat and visiting on the phone.” My youngest son is named Edward and he has always been called "Eddie." Starting in 1994, I began traveling to NOLA again, after over a 20 year absence. I did not get to see Eddie during all of my trips to NOLA; however, I will never forget the times we either spoke on the phone or saw each other, but most especially, our dinner in Algiers! Aunt Hazel always made my stays in NOLA special and now Eddie is with her and Uncle Archie. Two losses, too close. Gone too soon, cousin. Thanks for the memories.
Love,
Mary Anne

There are no photos of the family reunion that Aunt Hazel orchestrated at the pizza parlor near Loyola in the mid-1990's, and there aren't any pictures of you & me going to that tavern on the far side of the Quarter a few years later when everybody working there greeted you kindly as we walked in, but luckily for me the memory stored the visions and the experiences. I just wish that my work took me down that way more often. Thanks for the tour, Eddie.
