Ernest Peter Charbonnet Jr.

1925 - 2021

Ernest Peter Charbonnet, Jr. transitioned peacefully in his sleep with his loving children beside him at Passages Hospice on February 19, 2021 at the age of 95. Ernest was affectionately called "Danny" or "Zack" by family and friends, as many New Orleanians have nicknames. He was born in New Orleans to his parents, Ernest Peter Charbonnet, Sr. and Albertine Stephens on May 16, 1925. Danny "Zack" Charbonnet attended school where he gained critical skills in carpentry and fine cabinet making in addition to the academic curriculum. At the age of 18, he was called to serve his country and he fought in World War II in a Unit of the United States Navy – the Seabees. He was a most talented builder and led efforts in building landing ramps for aircraft carriers during World War II in remote places on islands such as Guam. He was discharged under honorable conditions from military service on December 25, 1945. In December of 1952, Ernest P. Charbonnet, Jr. married the love of his life, Celamcio M. Charbonnet, a marriage that lasted 66 years. From their union, three children were born, Denise, Ernest Ferrell (Freddie) and Alcerdes (Elsie). They enjoyed a loving and fulfilling family life! Their home was always graced by family, immediate and extended. He loved his wife's excellent creole cooking! In addition to raising their three children, they assisted Freddie with his son, Steve after his wife, Karen died in childbirth. Danny "Zack" was a most accomplished and masterful fine carpenter with a specialty in custom cabinet making. He was truly an artist, and there was nothing he could not do with wood. Early in his career, he worked for Providence Land Corporation, remodeling buildings and offices. For most of his long career, he was a self-employed contractor/ carpenter working in the home and business remodeling industry. His legendary work can be viewed in Charbonnet Funeral Home where he and other talented family members remodeled the façade. He was also featured on the news for completion of a special project at St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church in the lower Garden District of New Orleans with his brother Calvin, where they restored the Stations of the Cross after Hurricane Betsy. His work was a source of pride and a labor of love that he continued to perform until the age of 85. Danny "Zack" and Slim enjoyed participating in the vibrant social life in New Orleans. He was a member of the Webs Social and Pleasure Club, and the couple regularly entertained family and friends in their home. As grandchildren and great grandchildren were born, Danny "Zack" and Slim embraced every opportunity to have them over to spend fun times. They also traveled extensively with family and friends, enjoying cruises and trips to fun venues throughout the world! Enest P. Charbonnet, Jr, was preceded in death by his wife, Celamcio; parents, brothers and sisters; brother-in-law; daughter-in-law and son-in-law. His siblings included Anthony (Ramona), Vera (Adolph "Gabe"), Shirley (Peter "Pete"), Calvin (Glenda), Alice (Arthur), and Alcerdes. Also stated are his brother-in-law, Louis Barbe, daughter-in-law Karen D. Charbonnet and son-in-law, Linus Coignet. Left to mourn his loss are his children Denise, Ernest "Freddie" (Cathy), and Alcerdes "Elsie;" grandchildren, Sidney H. Cates, V (Catherine), Lauren (Rodney Warner), Steve Charbonnet (Anya), Kevin Coignet (Marlena), Brian Coignet, Rachel Charbonnet and Crystal Downer; great grandchildren, (Sidney, Olivia, Brian, Trenton, Dylaylan, Nace, Nivey, Maverick), as well as a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A PRIVATE (immediate family only) Funeral Service honoring the life of Ernest Peter Charbonnet, Jr. will be held in the Chapel of Charbonnet Labat Glapion Funeral Home, 1615 St. Philip Street, New Orleans, LA 70116. Due to the Covid 19 Pandemic, seating in the Chapel is limited. Everyone in attendance is required to adhere to all restrictions.
