Geneva Bocage Obituary

Mrs. Geneva Montgomery Bocage, A housewife, mother, secretary, and civic and religious leader was born in the town of Gretna, La. to Mr. and Mrs. George C. Montgomery, Sr. She matriculated through All Saints Elementary Parochial School, St. Mary's Academy for Girls High School, and L.B. Landry's Secretarial School. Coming from a family which included four brothers and three sisters, she found it nice to be the youngest girl. She is the wife of Mr. Robert J. Bocage, Jr., and the mother of four children who range in age from 73 to 66 years. After many years in the career of housewife and motherhood, she felt it necessary to find some form of diversion and a means of putting her many talents to greater use in the service of others. She received a position as secretary at All Saints Elementary and Parochial School, and was immediately elevated to the high rank of president of the school's PTA organization. She had served faithfully in this position for five years as special assistant to the pastor and principal. In this capacity, many duties have been performed with a mark of merit and above duty call. Besides the ordinary secretarial duties, it included being substitute teacher, librarian, custodian of books, moderator of band uniforms, chairman of the gifts for the clergy and faculty at Christmas time, general bookkeeper and clerk for school affairs. All Saints membership in the First District Council of PTA Association brought her into prominence again, where her talents were again immediately recognized and put to use. She has worked on numerous committees in the Council and continues to serve in being appointed parliamentarian for the First District, serving as Hospitality Chairman for the Tea in 1964, and appointed Chairman of the Council's banquet last year. Mrs. Bocage's service only begins here. A long list of memberships in worthy organizations and services rendered, but these, too, only begin to mention the great amount of work that has been so cheerfully contributed:

Membership in the NAACP Membership in the Urban League Ladies Auxiliary member of All Saints Parish First Vice President of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine Secretary of the High School of Religion Secretary at All Saints Parochial School Substitute Teacher and Librarian Certification from St. Andrew the Apostle in Theology and Christian Doctrine : Coliceed with March of Dimens of Teaching • Volunteered with Red Cross Geneva is one who is truly deserving of honor for services given to others beyond the call of duty."

Geneva M. Bocage, whose smile would always brighten your day, and whose stories always made you feel welcome, went home on January 23, 2024. She was 94. Many a soul graced Geneva's porch in search of cold cups, a sugary sweet frozen treat she made for the neighborhood kids but was enjoyed by everyone, to beat the blazing summer heat. In her later years, it was equally as nice just to swing on her porch with her, bathed in the golden glow of late afternoon. She loved making gumbo for her family as much as she enjoyed dining on gumbo before the Saint's games at the Superdome! Born Geneva Mary Montgomery on March 26, 1929, in Gretna, LA, to George C. and Victoria Wilson Montgomery, she married Robert Bocage in 1948. She has gone home to be with her nine brothers and sisters, husband Robert, and her daughter, Cheryl, but she is survived by her sons, Robert Ill, Michael and Kenneth (Shannon), as well as numerous grand and great grandchildren, who surrounded and showered her with love as she prepared to return home to her Heavenly Father. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral service on Thursday, February 1st, 2024 at the Saint Joseph Catholic Church located at 610 6th St., Gretna LA. 70053. The visitation will begin at 8;30AM followed by a 10AM mass. Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Avondale LA. My condolences to the family. Your parents were the perfect couple on Ocean Avenue. As they watched our children leave for school and return home safely. Those huckabucks your mom sold to all ages from the children to the city workers including Mr. J. Stone workers on any given day. We will miss you therefore, take your rest.

Miss Geneva was indeed an asset to All Saints School. She was loved and appreciated. Her children attended school alongside my family. May memories of her life console her family in the days ahead.
God loved her best and called her to her heavenly home. She has now joined all the loved ones who went before her.
May she rest in Peace.
