George Fegert Obituary

George J. Fegert died on Sunday, November 9, 2003 at Meadwocrest Hospital. Age 83 years. Beloved husband of Nellie Mae ""Penny'' Abraham Fegert. Son of the late Helena Reinig Fegert and Rutherford B. Fegert. Father of Ford J. Fegert and wife, Ginger of Vero Beach, FL, Forrest J. Fegert and wife, Anne of Shreveport, LA, Cheryl Lee and Carol J. Fegert both of New Orleans, LA and the late Rodney Fegert. Brother of Agatha Kynast of Saganaw, MI. Grandfather of Alex, Geordie and Forrest Fegert, Madeline, Jordan and Abbey Fegert and the late Brittany Fegert. Mr. Fegert graduated from Bay City Central High School where he served as Vice-President of his Senior class, graduated Bay City Jr. College and received a degree in Naval Archittecture and Marine Engineering from University of Michigan. He was one of the original founders of Delta College, Bay City, MI, a member of Theta Xi Fraternity, University of Michigan Alumni Assoc., Society of Naval Architect and Marine Engineers, Charter member and past President of Louisiana Shipbuilders Assoc., member and former National Chairman of Shipbuilders Conference of the American Waterways Operators and served as Chief Engineer for the Halter Marine. He was President of Gretna Machine and Iron Works from 1971-1991 and consulted for the firm through 1998. Mr. Fegert was a leader in the local shipbuilding industry in creating the school of Naval Architecture at the Univ. of New orleans. In addition to his professional career, Mr. Fegert was a lifetime member of Wenona Lodge, F & AM, Bay City, MI, Counselor of Wenona Lodge Order of DeMolay, Grand Lodge, State of Michigan, Master Counselor, Scottish Rite 33rd degree Mason and received the Chevelier and Order of Legion of Honor. He was a member of Rotary, Int'l, Propeller Club, supporter and booster of Univ. of Michigan Band and Univ. of Michigan College of Engineering and a member of Aurora United Methodist Church, Algiers, LA. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend visitation at MOTHE FUNERAL HOMES, INC., 2100 Westbank Expressway, Harvey, LA on Tuesday, November 11, 2003 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Aurora United Methodist Church, 3300 Eton St., Algiers, LA on Wednesday, November 12, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Bay City, MI. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Cancer Research Institute (Memphis, TN) or to Aurora United Methodist Church.
