George Lasseigne Obituary

George Augustine (Bubsy) Lasseigne, Jr., 92, passed away at St. James Place in Baton Rouge on Thursday, August 24, 2017. A native of LaPlace, he was a proud graduate of Leon Godchaux High School in Reserve, where he was a cheerleader, and attended Louisiana State University. In World War II, George managed a large depot in the Philippines as a member of the Quartermaster Corps of the US Army. Returning from the war, George married Agnes Faye Lousteau of Norco, who survives him. The couple celebrated seventy years of marriage in July 2017. George was active in LaPlace business, civic and church organizations. He worshipped at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Parish, where he was an usher and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He owned and operated LaPlace Oil Company, served on the board of the Bank of St. John, and supported his wife Faye in running Lasseigne's Fine Jewelers. For many years, George was also a part-owner and board member of San Francisco Plantation in Garyville before it was bought by ECOL and later Marathon Oil in the 1970s. George was also president of the LaPlace Lions Club and a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the LaPlace Volunteer Fire Department. In his later years he enjoyed membership in the Southern Yacht Club of New Orleans. In 1985 George and Faye moved to a Pontalba Apartment on Jackson Square in the New Orleans French Quarter and lived there for seventeen years. While there the couple were active in the St. Louis Cathedral, Patio Planters, and Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre. They then moved to the Garden District on St. Charles Avenue and later to Old Metairie. In 2014 they made their final move to St. James Place in Baton Rouge. In addition to his wife, George is survived by his five children: George Augustine Lasseigne III (wife Vivian Rotollo), of LaPlace; Loretta Lousteau Lasseigne Ragland (husband James Ragland), of Baton Rouge; Stuart Connell Joseph Lasseigne (wife Elizabeth Ermon), of LaPlace; John Albert Lasseigne (husband Orlando Sandoval), of Vancouver, Canada; and Edward Joseph Lasseigne (husband Philip College), of Columbus, Ohio. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Robert Ragland, Jeff Lasseigne, and George (G.A.) Lasseigne IV, and three great-grandchildren, Henry Lasseigne, William Ragland, and Phoebe Ragland. He is also survived by his only sibling, Doris Lasseigne Carville, widow of Jules A. Carville, Jr. of LaPlace, and their sons Jac and Thomas Carville. Services will be Thursday, August 31 at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, Louisiana 70124. Visitation will start at 1:00 pm; Mass of the Resurrection, 2:00 pm followed by a graveside service in Metairie Cemetery. For more information, call Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home at 504-486-6331. The Lasseigne family will always remember the loving, respectful care given to "Mr. George" by the entire staff at St. James Place. The family also fondly thanks George's sitters and the others who accompanied him on his journey through dementia, such as doctors, therapists and hospice workers. In lieu of flowers the family recommends donations to Hospice of Baton Rouge, 3600 Florida Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA 70806, telephone (225) 767-4673. Bonne nuit, mon chéri! We had some great times with George and Faye when they lived in the Pontalba Apartments. Such warm and gracious people that are greatly missed in this small community called the French Quarter. George was a man that lived life to the fullest.
