George Lund Obituary

LUND George Herbert Lund, Jr., age 73, died peacefully at home on Friday, June 6, 2008 after succumbing to a courageous battle against cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Patricia Hemstad Lund, son George H. 'Trey' Lund III, daughter Pamela Lund Birbiglia, daughter-in-law Molly Burke Lund, grandchildren: Lyndsay Ann Lund and Anna Laura Birbiglia, and sister: Kalila Lund and Carolyn Lucas. Mr. Lund was born on September 11, 1934 in New Orleans, Louisiana to George H. Lund Sr. and Carrie Frank Lund, who preceded him in death. He served honorably in the United States Navy and later joined the United States Border Patrol in 1965. Subsequent to his faithful service as a Border Patrol Agent along the United States/Mexico border in California, Mr. Lund returned to his native New Orleans as a Border Patrol Agent and then as an Immigration Inspector with the Department of Justice, United States Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). In 1976, in furtherance of his service to the United States, Mr. Lund packed up his family and transferred to British Columbia, Canada, where he served as an Immigration Inspector in Vancouver. The family longed to return to the Big Easy, and in 1978, Mr. Lund and his family returned to Louisiana and settled in Metairie, where he continued his long and distinguished career with the former INS and the Department of Homeland Security, United States Customs and Border Protection. Mr. Lund held many positions of distinction during his noted career, including Immigration Inspector, Immigration Examiner, Immigration Deportation Officer, Supervisory Immigration Inspector, Supervisory Immigration Deportation Officer, and area Port Director at the New Orleans International Airport. After dutifully serving his country for over 41 years, Mr. Lund retired in 2004. Mr. Lund liked to read - his favorite novel was Jonathan Livingston Seagull. The book exemplified Mr. Lund's outlook on life: follow your dreams, see beyond day-to-day activities, have the courage to stand by your beliefs, understand what and who you really are, and learn to love, learn, and forgive unconditionally. As portrayed in the book, Mr. Lund rejected the idea that the stronger can reach more by leaving the weaker friends behind. Mr. Lund was also an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed the Louisiana outdoors. However, his true joy was the precious time he spent with family. Whether camping with his wife in their Bounder RV, fishing the waters of Myrtle Grove and Lafitte with his son, or exercising every morning with his daughter at Cureton's Sports Club and the East Jefferson General Hospital's Wellness Center, Mr. Lund loved quality time with his family. He was adored by his loving granddaughters and he cherished the many occasions when they came to visit 'Gramps'. Mr. Lund was a kind and gentle man who always lead by example - he will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and co-workers. Mr. Lund's family would like to offer their appreciation for the loving care provided by Dr. Angelo Russo and associates, in particular Lori, the staff of Hospice associates, Demetria and Rhonda. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Memorial Services at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home Chapel 4747 Veterans Memorial Boulevard, Metairie, Louisiana on Wednesday afternoon June 11, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. Inurnment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery Slidell, Louisiana. Friends may visit from 11:30 a.m. until time of services. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice Associates 3601 Houma Blvd. Suite#210 Metairie, Louisiana 70006 (504-457-2200) preferred. Patti Jo and Family
We are so sorry for your loss. George was a unique individual. We can truly say that we never saw George have a bad day at work. With all the goofy things that happened to us at NOLA Immigration, George always saw a humorous side to things(except when he had to board a ship at anchor and we watched him crawl up the gangway).
George was was such a rare person in the fact that he was nice to everyone and always helpful to anyone around him. We will miss him.

The years go by and I get older by the day. When I learn about the passing of another old friend it always causes me to stop and reflect on those times in the past.

I worked with George in the 60's in New Orleans. He was in the Border Patrol them moved over to Inspections. Ditto to the many expressions in the guest book about his kindness and gentle approach to life. He was a true gentleman and always treated me with understanding and respect.

We lost contact years ago but when he learned I had retired and returned to my hometown he called me one day just to say hello. That was the kind of guy he was, caring, kind, interested, and just a pleasant person all around.

To all the family my deepest condolences go out to each of you.

Patti Jo, Trey, Pamela and family,
I have been out of touch with ya'll for too long, but I admired Mr. George very very much. (He'll always be 'Mr. George' to me.)
I remember listening to the Saints games with him and my Dad in the house on Blanche Street. He loved the Saints.
I remember him as joking, funny, and always tried to lift your spirits. I never remember him saying anything negative.
My Dad told me about George and him on the Kenner High football team, and how they went hunting and fishing, among other things :)

I was very very grateful that I saw and talked with him at my Dad's funeral in October 2006.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Family,
It’s the tough times which remind us that no matter how far or high we reach in our collective pursuits we are all still connected by the unity of our relations. Uncle George will be remembered as a father figure who was as kind as he was tall and offered many words of wisdom as we grew. His strength and dignity will carry on in Trey and always be cherished by Aunt Patti Jo and Pamela.
We will see you soon and for now, offer our greatest sympathies as we share in your sorrow.

I worked with George and knew his family for many years. George and I worked for INS at the airport and he was a wonderful supervisor but most of all, George was a great person. I never knew him to have a bad day, even when I messed up sometimes! In 1975, George and I travelled to Guam for an INS detail in spite of our mutual fear of flying. He did a lot of work there and was someone I could always count on. Was sorry to hear that he had passed away. My best to his family and they are in my prayers.

Trey: Goerge was one of the best supervisors I ever had the pleasure of working with. He taught me so much about figuring out what motivates people and realizing that everyone is motivated by different needs. He always tried to keep his employees needs and desires in mind when making assignments. He was also just a hoot to be around. I will always remember him fondly.

Having been out of touch for years, I am so glad that I got to see and talk to Mr. George a year and a half ago when he attended my father's funeral. My heartfelt sympathy to Patti-Joe, Trey, Pamela and the rest of the family. It's a very difficult thing to deal with I know. There was a lot of things I didn't know about Mr. George that I've learned from the beautiful write-up. You should be very proud.

I worked for George briefly in 1992, when my father was ill with cancer. George helped me through some critical times. What a great listener. I had the pleasure to work with him again a few years later, after my dad passed away. George will long be remembered by all whose lives he touched. Thank you George for crossing my path and for the lessons you have taught us that will remain with us. To George's family, the legacy left behind is the greatest gift a man can give. May God bless you and yours.
