Gloria Gonzales Obituary

Gonzales Gloria Elizabeth Maria Schaff Gonzales passed away peacefully at her home on the afternoon of Sunday, June 26, 2016, from complications associated with Lewy Body Dementia, three weeks after celebrating her 95th birthday. She was a native of New Orleans and a sixth generation New Orleanian. Mrs. Gonzales was the widow of Lambert Joseph Gonzales, Jr., who passed away six years ago shortly before their 67th wedding anniversary. She is survived by her children, Lambert Joseph Gonzales, III, and Janice Gonzales Barry; her son-in-law, Francis Julian Barry, Jr.; her grandchildren, Francis Julian Barry, III, and his wife Meghann Fitzpatrick Barry, and Maria Bertha Anna (Marianna) Barry and her fianc Bradley Christopher Boyd; her great-grandchildren, "Beau" and "Bigi"; and her devoted sister, Mrs. Anthony J. DeLucca (Audrey Schaff). She was the daughter of the late Valentine Adam Schaff, Jr., and Ruth Elizabeth Ragan and grew up in the home of her beloved paternal grandparents, Valentine Adam Schaff, Sr., and Maria Frances Haerer. She was predeceased by her sister Mrs. James E. Worley (Valerie Schaff) of Houston, Texas, and her brother, Valentine A. Schaff, III. To her son, she was generous in spirit and encouragement, and showed her love of art, music, and creative whimsy. To her daughter, she was "la grande dame," whose impeccable taste in dress and creative spark in decorating was a constant source of admiration. To her grandchildren, she was Mmre who attended every single one of their activities and always had to sit in the front row. She was for many years a parishioner of St. Patrick's Church where she faithfully attended Latin Mass. Before she was incapacitated by illness, she was a member of the Women's Opera Guild and Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge. The family is grateful to Gina De Jesus, Deborah Joseph, and Denise Brock, for their loving and faithful care of her during this long illness and to Sheila, Sharon, and other members of the home hospice staff of Notre Dame Hospice.Visitation will be held at JACOB SCHOEN & SON FUNERAL HOME on Canal Street from 10:30 am until 1:30 pm on Friday, July 1. A funeral Mass will follow in the Girard L. Schoen Chapel. For those who prefer to do so, donations may be made to Notre Dame Hospice, Poydras Home, St. Patrick's Church, or the Women's Opera Guild.
