Hans Jonassen Obituary

Hans Christian Boegh Jonassen, born March 15, 1965, passed away at age 56 in Augusta, Georgia on December 21st from COVID-19 complications. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Hans Boegh Jonassen and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bienvenu Landry. He is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Jacqueline Skains Jonassen. Hans died on their 25th wedding anniversary. He is also survived by his parents, Hans and Pierce Jonassen and a sister, Pierce Young (Tom) and his adored nephew and niece, William and Helen. Additionally, he was fortunate to be close to loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws with whom he shared many a riotous family gathering. Hans attended St. Martin's Episcopal School from pre-K until graduation in 1983. He was elected Mr. St. Martin's and captained the very successful Quiz Bowl team. His high school classmates and friends were his treasures. He graduated from Duke University in 1988. Being a Blue Devil was a great joy to Hans. With friends, he would camp outside of Cameron Stadium to assure getting tickets to the basketball games. They followed their team to the Final Four more than once. Hans began his business career in New Orleans in advertising. He co-founded Power Plant, a digital marketing firm. He was a wordsmith, excellent copywriter, and proofreader extraordinaire. He wrote many a poem or song for his friends' weddings and birthdays, none of which should be printed in a family newspaper. For a business opportunity, Hans and Jackie moved to Augusta in 2015 and in 2017 Hans became a partner in Pureland Properties LLC, a real estate investment firm, again using his marketing skills to enhance the company's success. Hans was wild about anything canine. He always had a Golden Retriever or two by his side. He loved the Beatles, trivia games, karaoke, and his hometown Saints. Hans will be remembered for his intellect, sense of humor and infectious laugh, but most of all, for his compassionate heart. A private family service will be held at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church officiated by Reverend Doctor Chris Currie with interment in the church columbarium. Memorial donations may be made to the Louisiana SPCA, 1700 Mardi Gras Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70114 or a charity of your choice.

Hans, hopefully while you´re busy in Heaven you´re still reading these entries. We met in 1982 at Boys State at LSU and spent a lot of time with others who were assigned to Vermillion Parish working on the multitude of various tasks assigned us, including that late late night you helped me build our map. I was struck by your kindness and awesome name, to the point that I had you slowly recite it so I wouldn´t forget it. I´m saddened that I wasn´t able to find you and reach out sooner to tell you thank you for your inspiration and friendship that week, I greatly appreciated it. Take care my friend, I will be seeing you soon.

I am saddened to hear of Hans' transition. Hans was a fun classmate. We probably aged Sr. Perez unnecessarily with our kidding. Hans will always be remembered by me as a bright, fun-loving character who enriched the lives around him.

Still grieving the loss of such a good person and good friend. Still find myself thinking of an idea or observation or joke and thinking 'Hans will love that' before remembering I can't share it with him. I think for many the feeling of loss at not having Hans as part of our lives will actually expand not contract with time. That's a fitting tribute to the kind of person he was.

Hans and Pierce

I am shocked and saddened about your loss. I'm sure there's not much I can say that will lessen your burdens, but my heart and prayers go out to both of you.

While I never met your son Hans - I note that he was (also) a Mr. St. Martins. That alone would have had him and me enjoying collegiality.

Again, my deepest sympathies.

Well...I am devastated by this loss. They did not come more loveable than Hans. As my mother would say, "He came by this naturally"...a true Jonassen trait. I have memories of trading doubloons w/ Hans when we were younger. I still have my doubloon collection and Hans' mark is all over it. We've lost a wonderful man, but I rejoice in knowing he lead a happy life.

What a terrible loss. I knew Hans mainly as my brother's friend, but as a fellow St. Martin's student, I also enjoyed his intellect (amply demonstrated in his Quiz Bowl performances), his wonderful sense of humor, and his simple goodness. I may not have seen him much in the intervening years, but I do know the world is a lesser place without him.

I was so sad to hear of Hans´ passing. He will always be an adorable 4 year old in my mind that I had the privilege of babysitting and watch grow while I lived next door. What an incredible man he became. Hans and Pierce, you were awesome parents and inspired me. My hearts go out to you and your family.
Love and prayers,
Your ex-neighbor and babysitter, Ailleen

Hans and Pierce & Family,
I am so sorry to learn of Hans' passing. Please know that you and Hans are in my prayers and accept my most sincere condolences. It seems like only yesterday that we were living on State Street next door to you. Your family literally lit up State Street and we were so fortunate to have you as our next door neighbors. I know that you and your family will miss Hans greatly, and I just want you to know that I will miss him, too.

Sincerely,
André Livaudais
