Jack Rouquette Obituary

Jack Leonard Rouquette, age 64, of Metairie, LA, passed away on January 6, 2017 and is now with the Lord. Jack was born in New Orleans, LA on September 5, 1952. He lived in Hawaii and California as a child and moved back to New Orleans in 1966 where he attended and graduated from Jesuit High School. He was part of the Jesuit swim team that won the State Championship in 1968, 1969, and 1970. Jack graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of New Orleans and later earned his Professional Engineering License. Jack's favorite pastimes included playing guitar at family reunions, storytelling (often laughing himself into tears), reading the Bible, Dollywood, astronomy, camping in the Smoky Mountains, and helping others. His all-time favorite trip was a 10-day family trip to Yellowstone National Park in 2011. He enjoyed sharing these activities with his beloved family and dogs, especially during his retirement. Loving husband to his wife of 32 years, Gretchen Rouquette; son, Dr. Jacob Rouquette, and daughter, Robin Rouquette; three brothers, Edward H. Rouquette (Carmen), John F. Rouquette, and Thomas W. Rouquette (Kathy); his aunt, Blanche Dieudonné; mother-in-law Enid H. Bardes; nieces Arlene, Julianne, Lauren, Melanie, Melissa, and Jordan; nephews Eddie, Jonathan, Christopher, Daniel, Sean, and Jeffrey, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward S. Rouquette and Yvonne R. Rouquette. Jack died due to aortic dissection. He donated his body to the LSU Health and Science Center (for medical training and research) and will be interred in the Rouquette Family Cemetery in Fontainebleau State Park at a later date. A memorial service was held January 8, 2017 in Covington, LA. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The American Heart Association in Jack's memory [https://donatenow.heart.org/]. Gretchen,
I just learned of Jack's death yesterday through Mark and am so saddened to hear this. I remember Jack as having a great sense of humor, gentle as a lamb, patient and loving. You two had a very special bond in life and I know you miss him terribly. I will pray for you Gretchen that you can find peace and comfort knowing that you will be with each other again in Heaven - never to be apart again.
Love and blessings to you,
Richard and Janet Giacontiere

Thank you to everyone who took the time to reflect on Jack and write an entry in his guestbook. Every single entry is appreciated, enjoyed, and treasured. His future grandchildren will read them one day. Means so much to me. And thanks for the many thoughtful cards and letters, meals, encouraging words, phone calls, text messages, hugs, prayers, AHA donations, etc. And, an extra thank you to Eddie, Jack's brother.

Jack was always kind and friendly and I enjoyed knowing his family and Gretchen.

Although I only met Jack a few times, I felt like it was God-ordained that he was a part of my life. He was such a kind and gentle person and he was absolutely hilarious! He had a heart of gold and I am beyond thankful for him and Gretchen taking in my dog, Hollister for me when I wasn't able to keep him with me. Jack and Hollister became best buds and I know Hollister misses him, too. The love that Jack had for Gretchen and his family and friends was evident as soon as you entered their home. I know I am only one of many who have been touched by Jack and his kindness. My heart aches for his family and for you, Gretchen. He is dearly missed and thought about often, more often than you know. But, I am also rejoicing because he is in Heaven, with our Heavenly Father.
I am so thankful to have been a part of Jack's life, even if only for a short time.
Gretchen, I think about you often and know that Jack will always be a special part of my heart. Love you!

I knew Jack through Gretchen. I only saw Jack a handful of times, but feel like I knew him for years. He was such a kind man. Jack and Gretchen have fostered my daughter's dog for quite some time now and he and Jack were buddies. I hope Jack knew how much we appreciated the way he cared for Hollister. I will certainly miss the one-ended phone conversations that I have been privy to over the years I have worked with Gretchen. It was a great source of entertainment, and anyone who knows Gretchen knows what I'm talking about! I always knew what Jack's tasks for the day were, what he was buying at the grocery for Gretchen to cook for dinner, whether he ate what Gretchen fixed for him before she left for work, how many times he walked the dogs, etc. Jack and Gretchen had something very special. The last time I visited their house, Gretchen was running around saying all the things that needed to be done, and Jack would say, Yes, Centurion over and over. He was funny. They were funny together, and had fun together! My prayers are with you, Gretchen, and Jacob and Robin as well. I am so sorry for your loss, but rejoice with you that you will see Jack again.

Oh Jack, how can I ever forget the many times we sat on the patio at night looking at the galaxy and Jupiter, the trip to the Smoky Mountains, and the trips we made with Gretchen to Dallas after Hurricane Katrina to see Robin. Best of all Jack, thanks for the trip to the Old River Flood Control Project area that meant so much to me.

And Jack, I'll miss your turkey carving skills at Thanksgiving and Christmas; especially when you would sneak me all the best pieces of dark meat when no one was looking. And later, when Gretchen was handing me a bag of leftovers as I was getting ready to go home, you would jokingly holler, "GRETCHEN STOP HER, SHE IS TAKING ALL OF OUR FOOD."

Thanks too for all of the other things you did for me that are too numerous to mention. I miss you. You were a good son-in-law. I'll be seeing you Jack. Wait for me at the Pearly Gates.

Love, Granny

My Dear Jack,

I miss you sooo very much. We all do. You were always so kind and loving to me. ALWAYS. You took such good care of the children and I. How will I go on?? ... God will show me the way. I am seeking Him. I really need His help in this.

This morning I could not find my keys anywhere. I kept looking and looking. You would remind me "keys, cell phone, wallet" when I would leave the house. I finally found my keys. They were in my pocket.

Every night I read 'The Four Gospels Combined Into One'. Your personal project - a chronological account of the four Gospels obtained from the Reese Chronological Bible, King James Version, which you condensed into one book. You finished January 2nd, just days before you went on to heaven to spend eternity with our Lord! You were passionate about studying the Bible. What a beautiful gift you left us. What a blessing from God. I will draw nigh to God as I read it.

Family and friends have been extremely supportive. I feel their prayers. You would be so appreciative.

Have you seen Frosty, Baxter, Mr. SMEE, or Sprite???

I long to be with you. I LOVE LOVE LOVE YOU!

Love, Gretchen

Jack.. I really appreciated you being such a great person first of all and for all of your wisdom and help. You were always willing to explain things on the many projects we worked on at the Corps. I will cherish the many memories we shared. Rest on Jack.

To Gretchen and family you have my deepest sympathy. Jack was a great person and very proud of his family. Carl Robinson

Jack had a great sense of humor & was very intelligent. My experiences with him started in the summers working at the School Board in the maintenance department. We were the college kids; the bosses were the "knot heads". We would bring our lunches. Whenever Jack had a banana in his lunch, he would throw away the ends as "the fly eggs were there" & according to him not to be eaten! During our work we were allowed to play the radio. Whenever Mongo Jerry's song In the Summertime would play, Jack would go into a silly shuffle in time to the music.

I'm sorry for your loss & that I didn't stay in touch with him.

May you find peace.

My first memory of Cousin Jack, is from the late 70's when Uncle Chester was still having his amazing parties in Big Branch. Those are some of my fondest memories as a child. My most special memory was from the Rouquette Family reunion in the 80's when Cousin Jack first turn me on to playing guitar.

From that point forward, at any family function, you were sure to find Cousin Jack and I off in a corner talking about crazy guitar riffs, new chords we were trying, and our love for Jesus Christ.

Thank you so much for giving me a chronological copy of the New Testament as well as all of the songs you tabulated for me. I will miss you deeply and I can't wait to jam with you again in heaven.

Jack has been my friend since we were 14 years old. You earned all of our respect in & out of the pool. Never too intense & never to theatric but full of down to earth DRY WITT. So often you kept us in stiches. You were a great husband, father & friend and will be missed by so many of us. You embodied so many attributes of St. Ignatius and I am so proud to be one of your friends. Rest in Peace my friend & we will meet at my finish line.

I knew jack during our Jesuit years when we were both members of the State Champion Jesuit swim teams of 1968,1969 and 1970.

Jack was a great breaststroker on the team and won a state championship on the 200 yard medley relay.

He always brought a sense of humor to practices
Our lives took us different places after high school but the bond we had on the swim team at Jesuit was forever.

Rest well , jack . No more swim practices for you

To the Rouquette family, please accept my deepest sympathies on the loss of your beloved Jack

Uncle Jack, I love you! I have wonderful memories of visiting with you, my grandparents and all my family down in New Orleans and Texas in my younger years. You brought so much fun with you and always made me feel special. It was always fun hanging out and listening to you play guitar. I am sure you are having a reunion on the other side now with grandma and grandpa and everyone else we love and hopefully keeping an eye out with all the other angels. Much love to you always, Arlene

I remember Jack for his wonderful sense of humor, his laughter and warmth. He was a integral part of our family's musical group. With his guitar accompanying us, we could sing out those old Hank Williams' tunes. Keep the music playing on earth and in heaven, Jack. We miss you, but your memory and shared good times live on. Your cousin, Jean

Jack,
The dedication you showed on the many, many big projects we worked together was greatly appreciated (by all). Although you looked at this place with a different perspective, your accomplishments were many, and your friends were many. Quite possibly the most intelligent person I have met in my life, rest easy my friend. Bubba Graff/Corps of Engineers

Thinking of Jack this morning, I wrote this:

JACK

Jack, my little brother,
I miss your laugh,
And your grace with the guitar.

I know you're smiling down
on all of us,
From your resting place afar.

Thank God for happy memories
and melodies with you.
In our hearts is where
you'll always be,
as we bid our fond adieu.
