James Alexander Obituary

James Alexander Jr., affectionately known as Jimmy, was born on April 29, 1962, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Ethel and James Alexander Sr. and was one of ten children. He began his relationship with our Lord and Savior at an early age, and he and his family were members of the Evangelistic First Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Anthony Pierce Senior. James was educated in the New Orleans Public School System and was a proud graduate of Walter L. Cohen Senior High School. It was at Walter L. Cohen where he met a recruiter for the armed services, and in 1980, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, where he proudly served his country for four years. Upon completing his commitment to our country, James returned to New Orleans to serve the city and community he loved dearly. His commitment to service started at the Hilton Riverside as a security guard. He proudly held this role for twelve years. In 1997, his servant leadership and duty to protect others led him to join the New Orleans Police Department. James was a model of the department's integrity, excellence, and teamwork values. When most officers turned down the opportunity to work in the sixth district, James was excited as it was the neighborhood he grew up in. When on patrol, he would always take the opportunity to talk with citizens and offer support. During Hurricane Katrina, one of the worst disasters in U.S. history, James stayed in New Orleans to protect, serve, and rebuild the city he loved. On April 12, 1986, James married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Leslie Fountain-two children, Jamie and James, were born into this union. James was a man who loved his family and wanted everyone around him to be prosperous. After serving 22 years with the New Orleans Police Department, James relocated to San Antonio, Texas, where he became a Live Oak First Baptist Church member. He enjoyed listening to jazz & gospel music, watching his favorite TV show - Law & Order, attending estate sales to purchase antiques, and dancing. He always cheered on his beloved New Orleans Saints during football season. James enjoyed traveling, his mother's cooking, and spending time with family and friends. James peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at the age of 61, surrounded by his wife and children. His father, James Alexander Sr., and his brothers, Mickey Alexander and Jackie Alexander, preceded him in death. To cherish his memory, James leaves behind his loving and faithful wife - Leslie Alexander; Daughter - Jamie Alexander; Son - James Alexander (Kellie); Mother - Ethel Alexander; Sisters - Charlotte Alexander-Simmons (Ray), Michelle Alexander-Fischer (Allen), Sabrina Marshall, Kim Alexander (Ronald); Brothers - Jerry Alexander, Kirk Alexander(Debra), Benjamin Alexander(Umeka); Devoted niece - René Alexander, affectionately known as his girl; Loving cousin - Ashley Jackson; Devoted uncle - William McCullum; Loyal childhood friends - Alvin Richardson and William Bostick; Trusty pup - Taylor, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and beloved friends. Relatives and friends of the family are all invited to attend the Funeral Service on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at 10:00 am at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 2200 Louisiana Ave., NOLA. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am. Burial will be private. Due to COVID-19, everyone attending is encouraged to wear masks and adhere to social distancing.
