James Rafferty Obituary

RAFFERTY James Daly Rafferty passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 2:10 in the afternoon. Born on June 7, 1936. Jimmy was raised in the Irish Channel on Annunciation Street. He attended Saint Michael's Grammer School and graduated from Redemptorist High School in 1954. He was the son of the late John Stevens Rafferty and Anna Rita Daly Rafferty. He was the brother of the late John Thomas Rafferty and great grandfather of the late Jacob Reed Cepriano. He was the son in-law of the late August Otto Windhorst. Jimmy is survived by his loving wife of fifty-four years, Elizabeth Windhorst Rafferty (Liz). Together they instilled in their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren the true meaning and importance of family and friends. Jimmy was a wonderful father to Terrance James Rafferty (Terry) and Elizabeth Louise Rafferty (Beth). Father in-law of Kim Poche Rafferty. He was idolized and adored by his four grandchildren, Jay Tucker, Erin Rafferty, Brittany Rafferty and Katelin Rafferty. He was also fortunate to welcome four great grandchildren into the family, Chase Jackson, Cade Icamina, Ayden Cepriano and Bree Rafferty. The kids were who truly made him light up and smile from the inside out. He would have soon added a granddaughter in-law, Laurie and her two children Seth and Victoria to the family. Jimmy is also survived by his mother-in-law Rose Motto Windhorst, his sisters-in-law, Eloise Staub Rafferty, Rosalind Windhorst Seicshnaydre and brothers-in-law August M. Windhorst and Alan C. Seicshnaydre. He is also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and wonderful friends. Jimmy was a retired diesel machinist from the Texas Pacific/Missouri Pacific Railroad. He was also a charter member of the Jesters Social Club. He belonged to TAK, Ancient Order of Hibernians, The Emerald Society and The Krewe of Endymion. He served on the Boards of The Irish Channel St. Patrick's Day Club and The Friends of St. Alphonsus. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of Jimmy's life on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at St. Alphonsus from 6:00pm-until and on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at St. Alphonsus from 9:00am until 11:00am for a final visitation and for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am at St. Mary's Assumption Church. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Jimmy's name to The Friends of Saint Alphonsus, P.O. Box 57143, New Orleans, LA 70130. Interment in Metairie Cemetery. Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Online guest registry available at www.leitzeaganfuneralhome.com.

As always I want to thank you and Dad for my sister. Mr. Jimmy was like a Dad to me and to Dennis. We will cherish the wonderful memories we have and all the fun we had together. Dear Mrs. Liz, Beth and Terry,

I can't tell you how sad I have been since this ordeal started almost a year ago. Mr. Jimmy was an unbelievable trooper and a true gentleman until the very end. I am so proud to have known him for the past 49 years and he will be greatly missed. Jimmy, Mike and my Dad (Tanker) - it's the end of a great era. All I can say is "what a ride"!
