Jan Elizabeth Nelson Key

1957 - 2023

Jan Elizabeth Nelson Key, a lifelong resident of River Ridge, passed away at her home on Friday, December 29, 2023 at the age of 66. Beloved wife of Robert M. "Mike" Key. Loving mother of Lawson Key (Stacey), Benjamin J. Key (Abigail), and Gerard E. Nelson, Jr. (Brittaney). Daughter of the late George E. Nelson, Sr. and Thelma Geerkin Nelson. Sister of Chris E. Nelson (Cynthia), daughter-in-law of Alice Marie Key (the late Norman) and her Aunt Vera G. Lyons. She is proceeded in death by three of her siblings; Peggy Nelson, George E. "Buddy" Nelson, Jr. (the late Judy), and Gerard E. "Jerry" Nelson, Sr. (the late Estelle); and her brother-in-law Bill Key (Judy Deuterman). Jan is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins whom she dearly loved. After graduating from Grace King High School, Jan received several associate degrees as well as a Bachelor's Degree from Southeastern Louisiana University. She was employed by the Social Security Administration upon graduation where she met Mike, her husband to be. Later, she worked at the National Finance Center at Michoud, from which she retired in 2005. Jan served as a Scout leader for both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for over 25 years at Our Lady of Divine Providence in Metairie. As a parent volunteer, she graciously contributed her time and energy to Archbishop Rummel High School while her sons attended. She greatly enjoyed the youth and adult friendships that she made during those times. As a devout Catholic, she lived her life guided by the principles of Christ; peace, love, mercy and charity toward others. Jan was a patriot, she served her country through her professional career in the federal government. More than anything, she loved being a mother, and she loved her family. She enjoyed hosting holiday and birthday gatherings with her siblings, cousins and extended family at her home, and she celebrated these events at every opportunity. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at 1:00 PM on Friday, January 5, 2024, at Saint Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church, 10021 Jefferson Hwy, River Ridge, LA 70123. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow the Funeral Mass at St Vincent De Paul Cemetery No 1, 1950 Soniat St, New Orleans, LA.
