I'll never forget Ms. Janet, or Mr. Ervin. Like another
set of parents for me.
Craig Cortello

Pardon the length of these sentiments, but I regret that I wasn't able to attend the service and there's a lot to say. Ms. Janet was one of the pillars of our neighborhood, and it feels as though there's a void on Edenborn St. now. She was the sweetest lady I've ever known, and my heart goes out to Mr. Irvin, Pat, Jamie, Sandy, David, Kevin, and your extended families.
It is said that those who are remembered are never really gone. So many fond memories of the Dares family and Ms. Janet - too many to mention but most vividly, my trip to the camp on Lake Salvador which included my first plane ride and hanging with the kids in the 'hood late into the night during the summers in the 70's with parents yelling from the front porch, "It's time to come in."
But mostly I remember that any time that I was in the vicinity of the Dares residence during meal time, I was included. It wasn't an option to say no. If you were a friend of the Dares family, your WERE their family. It was that simple. And as we all know, Ms. Janet was the glue that bonded your family.
Please know that the thoughts and prayers of the extended Cortello family are with you all.

Uncle Irv and cousins, we are all better people for having been blessed by Aunt Janet's patience, understanding and appreciation for God's presence in our lives. I remember Nanny's excitement for our Bi-Centennial poster contests at The Refuge and the Penny-Fairs on the porch on Bode Street and Friday evening picnics at the lafefront. Aunt Janet's beautiful smile will remain a wonderful memory we can all think back on and find strength, regardless of what life sends our way. More snow than we've seen here kept us home but please know everyone is in our thoughts and prayers.

Miss Janet would come to visit the children and always bring each one of them a "treat".
She was well loved by all the children and staff. Just her presence gave each and everyone a great "inner" happiness.
Miss Janet has always been one of God's Soldiers. Thank you Miss Janet for caring about everyone.

To The Dares Family,
I offer my deepest and most sincerest condolences for your loss.
My time spent at St. Christopher was enriched by Mrs. Dares' tutelage in both Religion and Art; both of which she taught with passion. I still have two of my drawings, aided by her instruction, which she urged me to submit into an Art contest and won two awards for.
Just as it has with me, I know her loving memory will remain with all her students, friends and family who were so lucky to have been touched by her spirit. Forever forward from this day will I look upon the beauties of nature as emboldened by the artistic touch of Mrs. Dares.
Respectfully,
February 1, 2011

While we humans pass onward, memories linger. She might well be now seen among the stars, those sparkles that we kids gazed upon from Joyces's front porch. Our awe at the shooting stars has been dwarfed by the wonders of her contribution to our lives.
