Jessie Brown Obituary

On Thursday, October 14, 2021, The Lord sent his angel to bring Sister Jessie Mae Brown to her heavenly home. Sister Brown, was born on December 6, 1928, to the union of Ingel Martin and Louis Davis Sr. She was raised under the guidance of her parents George and Ingel Wilson Sr. She was educated in the Jefferson and Orleans Parish School System and received her diploma later in life from L.W. Higgins High School. In June of 1947, Sister Jessie was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Moses M. Brown Sr, and to this union 8 children were born. Daisy, Moses, Deborah, Moses Jr, Louis, Kenneth, Keith, and Dedryl Brown. During her life's journey, Sister Brown was previously employed at Algiers General, Jo Ellen Smith Hospital (where she received employee of the year) and F. Edward Herbert, and Meadowcrest Hospitals. She was the first supervisor for the Girls Gretna Recreational Department for McDonoughville and was employed by Chief B.H. Miller Jr. At an early age she accepted Christ and was baptized at St. Paul Baptist Church. She served under Rev. Paul Payne, Rev. Eugene Roberson, and Rev. Orin D. Grant Sr. Sister Brown served as an usher for over 40 years and was the past ministry leader of the beautification ministry as well as the fellowship hall. She was also a member of the scholarship ministry and the pastor anniversary committee. Sister Brown was known in her church and her community as a willing worker. She served as president of the ladies' auxiliary for the Willie Davis Post 594 American Legion. She was a member of the Eastern Star Pride of Gretna #60 and volunteered for many years at the Gretna Community Center. Sister Brown was affectionately known as, "Maw – Maw" or "Nanny" to her family. She also cooked a mean pot of red beans and welcomed anyone to a plate of food. She had a special relationship with her grandchildren and especially her great and great-great-grandchildren. In her homegoing she leaves to mourn and cherish her loving memories to her loving children, Deborah, Moses Jr, Louis, Kenneth (Kathy), Keith, Dedryl, Alton (Phyliss), Dr, Jacqueline Clark and her daughter of love, Evette Mattox. Her grandchildren, Danyell, Bridget, Douglass, Joe, Michael, Chantrice, Louis Jr, Duane, Lynnay, and Kendra. 27 great grandchildren, 11 great - great grandchildren, siblings, Gladys, Angel, Audrey, and Major (Annette). 6 God - children, Audrey, Gerald, Linda, Mark, Adonis, and the late Lois Gipson. Special friend Lorraine Sullen and a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Sister Jessie Mae Brown was preceded in death by her husband Moses M. Brown Sr, and her parents, Louis Davis Sr, Ingel and George Wilson Sr. Two of her children, Daisy and Moses. Siblings, Louis Davis, George Wilson Jr, Edward Wilson Sr, Wallace Dell, Edward Davis Sr, Abraham Wilson Sr, and Isaac (EJ) Wilson, Elvira Strider & Florence (Snook) Peters. Her in-laws, Leeonnia, Montee and Lem Brown. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the celebration of life services on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at St. Paul Baptist Church located at 1509 Monroe Street, Gretna, LA 70053. The visitation will begin at 8 a.m., and the service will begin at 10 a.m. Pastor Orin D. Grant Sr, officiating and interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, located at 3540 US-90, Avondale, LA 70094. Due to COVID-19, everyone in attendance must wear a facemask or other proper facial covering and practice social distancing.
