John Benjamin Coffer Jr.

John Benjamin Coffer, Jr, 86, passed away quietly in his sleep on Sunday June 10, 2018. He leaves behind his former wife and primary care taker, Gaye Horrell Coffer, sons Zane, Cole (Ginger) and Eric Coffer; two grandchildren Claire and Reed Coffer. His son Trey and sister, Marie Coffer Rowland, proceeded him in death. He was the son of the late Myrtle Meyer Coffer and John Coffer, Sr.; maternal grandson of the late Marie Muntz Meyer and Frederick John Meyer of Algiers, La.; paternal grandson of the late Lee Honeycutt Cofer and James Alford Cofer of Jasper County, Georgia. He was a graduate of St. Aloysius High School, class of 1950; and Southwestern Louisiana Institute in Lafayette, class of 1955, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. John took his Catholic faith very seriously having attended daily Mass. He was proud of the fact that he was baptized in St. Louis Cathedral. He belonged to the St. Dominic Dad's Club and was co-chair of the 1976 Bicentennial Spring Fair. He belonged to the Our Lady of Lourdes (Slidell) Parents Co-Op. John was a member of the New Orleans Social Activities Club for many years. He was a member of the Indian Guides and enjoyed outdoor activities with his sons. John was a veteran of the United States military. He served with an enlisted rank in the Louisiana Army National Guard 141st Field Artillery Battalion. He was a member of the Air Force ROTC while at SLI before receiving a commission in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from service holding the rank of Captain. John Coffer, a Professional Civil Engineer, was retired, having worked for both the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans and Boh Bros. Construction Company. Funeral services are planned for Monday, July 9, 2018, at St. Dominic Church, 775 Harrison Avenue. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial beginning 11:00 am. Interment will be in Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery.
