John Mitchell "Mitch" Hebert

John Hebert Obituary

John Mitchell ""Mitch'' Hebert. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Berwick for John Mitchell ""Mitch'' Hebert, 44, who died suddenly on June 6, 2003, at his home in San Francisco. Visitation will be observed from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will continue at 8 a.m. Thursday and continue until the beginning of the funeral service officiated by the Rev. Sabino Rebosura. Mitch was born in the small town of Berwick, La., in 1958, the fourth child of Earl Hebert and Nelwyn Shepherd Hebert. At an early age he felt the pull of bigger places and used hard work and creativity as his transportation. He founded his first flower shop at the age of 19 in his hometown, the start of a full and creative life in business for himself. He lived in New Orleans for most of his adult years, where he built and ran a successful florist business still known as Mitch's Flowers. At the time of his death, Mitch was several months into establishing another elegant flower shop in San Rafael, Calif. Many will remember the richness of Mitch's spirit in the gorgeous and innovative designs he created for innumerable large celebrations; others will remember his talent for simply turning something ordinary into an object of beauty and meaning. In addition to his creative talent and business savvy, Mitch was a classic car collector and an avid fisherman. He spent every extra minute on his boat or cooking seafood at the family camp in Grand Isle. Mitch's time will not be meas-ure in the years of his life, but in the life in his years. His wit and zest will be missed. Mitch is survived by his parents; his son, Blake Hebert of Lafayette; two sisters, Julie Hebert and her husband, Kenn Norman, of Los Angeles, and Janice Hebert and her husband, Arthur Cormier, of Washington, D.C., and Lafayette; and two brothers, Earl J. Hebert Jr. and his wife, Becky Scott Hebert, of New Roads, and Bradley P. Hebert of Baker. Mitch was also the proud uncle of Stephan Williams of Port-land, Ore., Alexis Petrakis of San Francisco, Mallie Hebert of Lafayette, Annie and Lily Cormier of Lafayette, and Chel-sea and Benjamin Hebert of Baker. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Anita Aucoin Hebert and Oscar Hebert of Berwick, and Lottie Price Shepherd and Percy Shepherd of Morgan City. Twin City Funeral Home in Morgan City is in charge of arrangements.

Many of my family's best times and best memories are because of Mitch. We will miss him, but it's clear he will not be leaving us.

Although I didn't know Mitch, I feel as if I did. He was a good friend of my mother (Patrice) and based on her relationship and descriptions of him, I feel sadness that I will never get a chance to know someone who was, by all accounts, an amazing man. My condolences to all of his family and friends.
