John Horne Obituary

John Hynes Horne passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, in Stone Mountain, Georgia at the age of 83. He was born to Dr. Mark Daniel Horne and Isabelle Lillian (Little) Bouny Horne in New Orleans on February 3, 1941, and was named after his great uncle, Rev. John William Hynes, SJ. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Judy Copponex Horne, and son Dr. John Hynes Horne, Jr. and spouse Elizabeth Anne Harland, son Gregory Dean Horne and spouse Dana Keyton Horne, daughter Ashley Marie Desmond and spouse Richard Patrick Desmond, and daughter Shani Danielle Horne and spouse Patrick Harold McCloskey, whose children, Kai Horne McCloskey and Keira Horne McCloskey, were his treasured grandchildren and the apple of his eye in his golden years. His beloved siblings include sisters May Horne Fister, Danielle (Jo Jo) Horne DesAngles, Margaret Horne Scafidi, and Dr. Maryanne Horne, and brothers Michael Gerard Leo Horne and (late) Mark Daniel Horne, Jr. He often reminisced fondly of growing up roaming the streets of New Orleans and the Irish Channel with brother Mark (Sparky) and "other brother", cousin (late) William (Billy) Jewett. In addition to his profound Catholic faith, he remained throughout life a proud and integral member of a very close-knit extended family, led by matriarch Isabel (Tippy) Bouny, and in addition to the Hornes and Fisters, included the Jewetts and Burns, and later, wife Judy's family, the Copponexes. He was a graduate of St. Bernard Prep, Loyola University, and Loyola University College of Law. He served as a Captain in the Army's 101st Airborne Division as a combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam in 1965-66 and was awarded the Purple Heart. He remained a proud veteran and member of the 48th Assault Helicopter Company and the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association throughout his life. After receiving his Juris Doctorate from Loyola in 1970, he worked as an attorney for the Department of Defense, IBM, and the Singer Corporation, until he moved into private practice, eventually becoming a partner at several firms, including Constangy, Brooks & Smith, Powell, Goldstein, Frazer & Murphy, and John Horne & Associates, until retiring only recently in 2022. He was an avid baseball fan who was a season ticket holder for the Atlanta Braves for many years, and was in attendance when the Braves broke a long dry spell and won the world series in 1995. He travelled to spring training in Florida every year with close friends and fellow fans, Dan Murphy and Bill Principe. That he will be missed is a profound understatement, for as daughter Shani has said, "Everyone who knew him was glad they did". He will be interred in a private ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.

Jack, Bill and I had a tradition of going to FL every spring training baseball season during the week of St. Patrick´s Day for over 30 years. We will continue that tradition this year with Jack and Judy´s two sons, Jake and Greg. Looking forward to it.
