John Paul Vignes passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 2, 2024, in New Orleans, La. at the age of 83. In Heaven, he joins his wife of 54 years, Carol Ann Vignes. John was born in New Orleans, La. on October 2, 1940, to Rene and Lorraine Vignes, who preceded him in death. He is also preceded by his beloved wife, Carol Ann Goertz Vignes, his brother Richard Vignes, and his son-in-law Raymond Volpi. John was most proud of and survived by his 15-year-old dog "Lulu". He was also proud of and survived by five children, Stephen Vignes (Jeanice), Todd Vignes (Bobbie), Anne Marie Volpi (Raymond), Timothy Vignes (Eve), and Julie Lamy (Tobie). He was a loving Paw Paw to eleven beautiful grandchildren, Chad (Natalie), Ian (Erica), Seth (Mallory), Mason, Kelly (Bryce), Cory (Rebecca), Allee, Emma, Jacob, Sammy Jo, and Sophie. John was blessed with 8 wonderful great-grandchildren Dylan, Avery, Ethan, Caroline, Locke, Marigny, Grayson, and Porter. John graduated from Jesuit High School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He completed his duty to country as a corporal and pursued a career as a printer with the Times Picayune Newspaper in New Orleans. He retired after 25 years and continued employment with Baker CAC before joining the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office as a Bailiff in the 24th Judicial District Court of Jefferson Parish until his retirement in November of 2007. Devout in their Catholic Faith, John gave of his time and talents to Christ the King Parish for many years. John shared his love and passion for Christ as a CTK high school CCD teacher. He worked on the design and printing for the parish newspaper. He and his wife Carol were charter members and Directors of the Christ the King Catholic Youth Ministry. They led weekend retreats for couples in the Marriage Encounter Ministry. John was a storyteller. He could capture an audience with his somewhat tall tales. His passion for life and beauty are evident in his paintings and sketches. He enjoyed reading, cooking, and gardening. He served his community as a coach and mentor. He was a self-taught New Orleans historian. He had been known to give interesting and sometimes comical tours of the city. John loved New Orleans, the history, the heritage, the cuisine. He was a true New Orleanian. He loved the summer… Not so much the winter. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially at the Mississippi house in Clermont Harbor where he and Carol hosted the annual Family Easter Sunday Crawfish Boil and Fourth of July Celebration. As Friends of City Park, they also gathered with their extended family every year for Christmas in the Oaks. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for the funeral mass and burial on May 13, 2024, at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd. in New Orleans. Visitation begins at 11:00 a.m. with Mass following at 1:00 p.m. In addition to prayers and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's name to the Environmental Defense Fund, The Humane Society, and Jesuit High School.
