Jose Martin Peraza

Jose Martin Peraza, age 89, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2015 at his home in Hammond, LA under the loving care of his family. His son, Alberto Jose, his daughter Elena del Carmen and his son-in-law Kenny Herty, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Susana, and his children, Carlos Jose Peraza, Ligia Maricela Perazabaker, Jose Luis Peraza and Susana Herty. His daughters-in-law, Kim Peraza, Beverly Peraza, Diane Delahoussaye, Joyce Peraza and his son-in-law, Stu Baker, also survive Jose. He was the proud grandfather of Jennifer Peraza, Jose Peraza, Adam Peraza, Brandi Kowalski, Christopher Peraza, Seth Peraza, Aaron Peraza-Baker, Billy Herty, Maya Peraza-Baker, Laura Herty and Jennifer Perez. Eight great-grandchildren also survive him. Jose was born in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico and immigrated to New Orleans in 1954. He lived the majority of his life in St. Bernard, LA and after Hurricane Katrina lived 6 years in Slidell, LA and the last 3 years of his life in Hammond. Jose was a master gardener and a skilled craftsman in iron, wood, and stained glass. He made every community he lived in more beautiful through his gardens and the ironwork structures he designed and created. Friends and neighbors are invited to join his family in celebrating his life with a memorial gathering at his home in Hammond on Saturday, April 4th from 12 PM to 3 PM.
