Joseph Fetter Obituary

Joseph "Joe" Fetter III passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 14, 2021, at the age of 72 surrounded by his family. Known to his family as Buddy, he leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Joan Rester Fetter, his daughters, Melissa Maresma (Chris) and Amanda Milton (Caleb). He was the loving "Pops" to Myles and Walker Maresma and Mackenzie and Gavin Milton. Buddy was born on April 16, 1949, Joe Joseph Jr. and Iris Fetter of Arabi, Louisiana. He is survived by his sisters, Charlotte Grannan (Patrick) of Pass Christian, Mississippi and Dr. Deborah Nastasi (Joseph) of Biloxi, Mississippi; and brother, Christopher Fetter of Chalmette, Louisiana. Buddy is also survived by his brother-in-law, Gene Rester Jr. of Bogalusa, and Sarah Bourgeois (Paul) of Abbeville. Joe graduated from Holy Cross High School in 1967. He graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University with a BA in Elementary Education and an MA in Elementary Administration. He taught at Mandeville Middle School and then served as Principal until retiring from the school system in 2007. From 1969-1971, Joe served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Hepburn during the Vietnam War. Joe was very patriotic and instilled the love of country in his family. Joe was a member of the State and Local Retired Teachers Associations, the City of Covington Planning and Zoning Committee, and a dedicated member and usher for the First Baptist Church of Covington. Joe was also a member of Larry McKinney's Bible Study Class. As an avid fisherman, Buddy enjoyed spending time with his grandkids on local rivers and catching a Big Ole Bass from his Ranger boat. In lieu of flowers, Joe requested donations be made to the First Baptist Church Special Needs Ministry, 16333 Highway 1085, Covington LA 70433. Relatives and friends are invited to the Funeral Service at The Chapel at First Baptist Church of Covington, 16054 Murphy Road, Covington, LA 70433 on Thursday, November 18, 2021, at 12:00 Noon with visitation from 10:00 AM until service time. While news of Mr Fetter´s death found me today, he passed in 2021. Mr Fetter wasn´t just a great principal at Mandeville Middle School, he was like having a father to talk to everyday for a girl that moved four states away from her own.

Mr Fetter greeted me and my boys everyday with a smile and kind words. He knew when things weren´t right at my home and guided me to people who could make it right, my own family back in Jacksonville.

He will probably never know how he helped me through the terror of Katrina, teaching and rebuilding with one son in Jacksonville and a one year old with me in Mandeville and eventually leaving a very unhealthy marriage.

I weep tonight for the loss his family has endured, the community that mourns for a great educator, and for the man who ultimately turned my life in a new direction with a few kind words only someone who loves you would say. He said " take your boys home to Florida and tell your ma and pa what life has been like here. You will be safe there." The next morning I called my parents from the banks of Lake Pontchartrain and told them I was coming home for good.

Thank you Mr Fetter for caring and loving me as your own. I will never forget you.
