MASELLI Joseph Maselli died Sunday after a brief hospitalization at Ochsner Foundation Hospital. He was 85. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Antoinette Cammarata Maselli, his brother Dominick Maselli, his four children, Joseph Maselli, Jr. (Donna), Frank Michael Maselli, Jan Maselli Mann (Jim) and Michael Gerard Maselli (Stacy); 8 grandchildren, Caroline Maselli, Annie Maselli, Matthew Mann, Michael Mann, Michael Maselli, William Maselli, Melani Maselli and Sandy Maselli. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank Maselli and Mary Iannetti Maselli, his brother, Carmine Anthony, and his grandson, Joseph Maselli, III. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, the son of Italian immigrants, and was transferred to New Orleans during WWII, ultimately meeting his wife of 63 years, Antoinette Cammarata and attending Tulane University on the GI Bill. After graduating from Tulane in three years, he opened a small liquor store which eventually grew to become City Wholesale Liquor Company, and wholesale distributorship which is a thriving business 60 years later. A true entrepreneur, he ran or financed numerous other businesses throughout the New Orleans area. Mr. Maselli was an amateur sports enthusiast with a special love for the Tulane Green Wave. He supported amateur boxing and traveled with the U.S. Olympic boxing team to Russia in 1971 and then brought the Russian team to fight an exhibition match against the U.S. team at the Louisiana Superdome a few years later. He was also on of the founders of the Carrollton Boosters in the late 50's. By 1975, Mr. Maselli focused his energy on civic endeavors and, in particular, on preserving the Italian culture and heritage, and fighting against prejudice on behalf of all nationalities. He founded the Italian American Federation of the Southeast and was founding member of National Italian American Federation in Washington D.C. He published the Italian American Digest and founded the American-Italian Museum. He was instrumental in developing the Piazza d'Italia in New Orleans and served as an ethnic advisor to Presidents Ford, Carter, Reagan and Bush. In 1984, he developed the "Italian Village,"one of the most popular aspects of the World's Fair. Included in his many honors were his receipt of The Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Medal of Freedom, the National Conference of Christian and Jews Weiss Award, and the Torch of Liberty Award of the Anti-Defamation League. He was awarded the title of "Grand Ufficiale," the highest commendation from the Italian government for his lifetime work preserving the Italian Heritage. He considered his children and grandchildren as his proudest accomplishments. Honorary Pallbearers are John Amato, Justice Pascal Calogero, Dr. Phillip Cancilleri, Ernest Colbert, Eddie Compass, Larry Conkerton, Thomas D'Angelo, Lolis Elie, Judge John Gale, William Goldring, Nick Greco, Dominic Grieshaber, Russ Herman, Jim Letten, Moon Landrieu, Tommy Lasorda, Ron Maestri, Salvatore Panzeca and Joseph Scelsa. Not sure what to say?

Gianni Blasi

November 9, 2009

Dear Frank and Family, the loss you suffered is our loss as well. It is the loss of a great Italo-American and therefore his departure impoverishes all Italo-Americans in the world. On my personal behalf and on behalf of Mayor Quadrini and Vice Mayor Luciano Duro of the Township of Isola del Liri, do receive our most felt condolences.

But this sad moment must not let us lose focus of what Joe's fundamental teachings were and remain. So in this time of mourning I wish to be propositive, as Joe was all his life, and in the same style I wish to make a committment in his honour: I will bring an Italian gospel choir to New Orleans to sing in remembrance of Joe Maselli and in support of all his cultural accomplishments, no matter what it takes, a year, two or whatever.

Frank, a heartfelt embrace to you and your family,
Gianni Blasi

Dear Antoinette and Family:

We were so sorry to hear about Joe's passing. We were out of town
and unable to make the service. He will always be remembered by
his family and friends as a true Italian gentlemen. We will remember
him fondly. Joe and Marilyn Marino

How do you measure the worthiness of a person? Is it by accomplishments? Or is it by acquisitions accumulated? By the love that one gives and in turn receives? By the number of friends one attains in a lifetime? Or is it by persuading others to live their lives by measures they admire in the life being measured? It is probably all of these. No matter how one measures Joe Maselli’s life the answer comes out as outstanding. For me he was blessed with the four graces of living to which we should all aspire. They are the 4 H’s. The first is Humanity which gives us the ability to care for our fellow man and to reach out always trying to help others by sharing in any good fortune that is bestowed upon us or earned through great effort. It is where our love comes from in return for the love we give. The second is Honor as this gives us the ability to respect as well as be respected. It is the measure that allows us to be trusted and in turn learn to trust. It is the core of our integrity. The third is Humility for this is borne from the understanding that no matter how far we go in life we start by standing on the shoulders of those who precede us. There are many who help us grow far beyond their own lot in life. It is this recognition that leads us to try to give back by perpetuating this cycle of giving to make our world a better place for all. Finally, the fourth is Humor for no matter how we prepare for the sometimes harshness of life the only thing that will always get us through these tough times is having a sense of humor and being able to laugh at ourselves. Joe embodied all of these qualities in as natural a way as humanly possible. Maybe he worked at doing so but for me he seemed a natural. His lessons for successful living were real. He was a true “4 H’er”. He was a man for the ages. I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to know him for what he really was.

Caro Signore Maselli,Sr.
I hope I translated this correctly.
"Possano gli angeli portarti in cielo"
("May the angels carry you to heaven."}
I had the pleasure of meeting you many years ago. Mr. M.L. Legarde gave me, my son and my father tickets to a Tulane game and to a Zyphers game. We had never been in a suite at any game. You were so kind to us and made us feel right at home. What a gentlemen. I also had the pleasure of taking care of you at Marc Bernstein, M.D.'s office. I will pray for you at this Sunday's Mass. Thanks for all the work you have done for the Italian-Americans in New Orleans.
Grazie,

When anyone hears of the passing of a dear friend, one's mind immediatley flicks through the memories they had with that dear friend. Like holding old photos in the palm of your hand, you study each one carefully, dwelling on the moment, then turning to the next. Each embracing a special moment which will never be lost.
That's what we have been doing since we heard the news of Mr. Maselli's passing. While it is a significant loss to our city, we should all celebrate his life and what he left us. Mr. Maselli loved New Orleans and EVERYONE who live here. We will have to look hard for someone like that, if he or she exist, at all. He always had a kind word and a joke for everyone, regardless of their station in life. A man like that is rare. Others pretend. Joe Maselli was an ORIGINAL!!!
So, as we morn OUR loss, we can take solace that he was here with us, laughed with us, cried with us and now, somehow I believe, will always be with us. Rest in Peace "Pops".

Dear Maselli Family,
Almost 25 years ago I was trying to do historical research at the AIRF Library, but on each visit Mr. Joe Maselli curtailed my efforts by convincing me to cut out wedding announcements from newspapers for his archives. Nevertheless I became a prolific writer for the DIGEST, accepting countless labor-intensive assignments from Mr. Maselli, including - his particular favorite - the Nick LaRocca story. He called himself a "volunteer recruiter" and, as such, enlisted the assistance of myself and so many others as newspaper delivery person, contributing writer, ad salesperson and Museum volunteer. He loved the Museum and the DIGEST and that love was contagious. One of my greatest honors in life was being asked by Joe Maselli to replace him on an official delegation to Italy in 1997. Although I have lived in Shreveport since Katrina,I ran into Mr. Maselli on many return trips to New Orleans. On one visit he drove me and a trunkful of DIGESTs from the Museum to my friend's house in the Quarter, ensuring that I would get his beloved newspaper distributed in North Louisiana. My sincere condolences to the family and to all who knew him....there will never be another Joseph Maselli.

Dear Joe:
Please accept my condolences on the death of your beloved father. I know you are sad but you should celebrate the life of this great American who gave so much to the New Orleans community. Your father always had a progressive view of our city and enjoyed life. His love of the Italian community was a moving force in uniting its constituents after Hurricane Katrina.

Although I will be taking depositions in North Carolina on Friday, my thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family. I know your dad is in heaven. I just hope I will , in the future, be able to see him there.

With much love,

October 20, 2009

I was only his server in a restaurant that he frequented, but he really made me feel like he cared about the direction my life was taking and my well being. He made a lot of people feel like that! I will never forget our talks about family, our shared love for our alma mater (Tulane), and the inspiration he brought to my life. One of the last times I served him he gave me this bean and said it would bring me luck… My luck is that he came into my life in the aspect and short time that he did. After many years on this earth he acquired a way of approaching life and people that I have learned a lot from. I know his days were filled with happiness as he was surrounded by his family (his favorite place to be). I will miss him greatly and I hope to be able to live a life as fulfilling as his.

Cousin JOE had a heart of gold. He was always an inspiration to me and our family. When I saw him on the streets of New Orleans, or the coffee shops, I would stop my car and run to give him, and usually his compadre, Roy Anselmo, a hug. These two were always telling me stories or promoting something. This is a great worldly loss to our family, but God will enjoy sitting around and having JOE tell stories about Italian Americans. Our condolences to Antoinette, Frank, Joe, Jan,Mike and their families. God Bless You all. Love, JoAnn Anselmo Merse,(Jodi), and George and MIchael.
