Joseph Musso Obituary

Dr. Joseph 'Buck" Musso, age 74 years, passed away in his sleep at 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2003 at his home. Born February 6, 1928 in Thibodaux, LA. Dr. Musso was a graduate of Thibodaux High School, Louisiana State University and LSU School of Medicine. He was the son of the late Frank P. Musso and Paulene Hogan Musso. Dr. Musso served in the United States Marine Corps from 1946 to 1948. After graduation from medical school, he did his internship at Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans from 1954-55 and moved to Delcambre, LA in 1956 to establish a family practice. In 1957 he moved to New Iberia, LA, where he continued his family practice until 1984. At that time, he became medical director of Emergency Room Services at Dauterive Hospital until his retirement in 1996. Dr. Musso served as Coroner of Iberia Parish from 1972 until 1992 and was a member of the Louisiana Coroner's Association. He served as President of the International Coroner's Association. Dr. Musso was President of his Senior class in medical school and past president of the Iberia Parish Medical Society and the Iberia Parish Tuberculosis Association. Dr. Buck served as team physician to the Catholic High Panthers for 25 years and was president of the Panther Club in 1971. He was a Charter member of Sugar Oaks Country Club. Dr. Musso was an avid sportsman who enjoyed duck, deer and elk hunting and was a past sponsor of Ducks Unlimited and a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He is survived by: his wife of 52 years, Georgia Boudreaux Musso of New Iberia, LA; his sons: Thomas Musso of Lafayette, LA, John Musso of New Iberia, LA, Stephen Musso and his wife, Melany of New Iberia, LA; two daughters: Anne Melancon and her husband, Keith of New Iberia, LA and Susan Viator and her husband, Chuck of New Orleans, LA; two brothers: Robert Musso and Camile Musso both of New Iberia, LA; one sister, Rene Lee Waguespack of Napoleonville, LA and seven grandchildren: Lisa Dempsey, Jay Dempsey, Mollie Melancon, Amy Claire Viator, Margaret Viator, Caroline Viator and Maria Musso. Dr. Musso was preceded in death by: his father, Frank P. Musso; his mother, Pauline Hogan Musso and a sister, Frances Musso Roundtree. Funeral Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at St. Peter's Catholic Church with the Rev. Jude Halphen, officiating. Entombment will be in the Holy Family Mausoleum with members of VFW Post #1982 Honor Guard Presenting the Flag. Visitation will be Friday fom 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Evangeline Funeral Home which will reopen Saturday from 8 a.m. until the time of services. Pallbearers will be Malcolm Thibodeaux, Michael, Matt and Mark Musso, Gwain Roundtree, Ricky Musso and Donald Waguespack. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Oscar Alvarez, Nookie Breaux, Dr. L.O. Broussard, Henry Fairchild, Billy Farrell, Dr. Jay Halphen, Dr. Mike Halphen, Sam Kennedy, Jr., Dr. Roy Landry, Mac LeCompte and Gene Patout. In lieu of flowers, donatios may be made to the Catholic High Endowment Fund or Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, 5841 Cedar Lake Road, Suite 204, Minneapolis, MN 55416. EVANGELINE FUNERAL HOME, New Iberia, LA in charge of arrangements.
