Kathryn Dureau Obituary

A model of grace and the personification of resilience, Kathryn Elizabeth Adds Dureau, age 91, entered into Heaven on Sunday, January 22, 2017. Beloved wife of the late Albert P. Dureau, Jr., Kathy was born July 25, 1925 in Dallas, TX. She and Al were accomplished world travelers and proud to call New Orleans home. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, George Cleo Adds and Alice Irene Adds and brother in law Kenneth W. Tipton, Sr. She is survived by sister Barbara Jean Adds Tipton.; nephew Kenneth W. Tipton, Jr. and wife Patricia Horton Tipton; niece Nancy Tipton O'Neal and husband Jeffrey O'Neal; great nephews Michael Tipton and David O'Neal; great nieces Rebecca O'Neal Gorham and Kendyl Tipton Brunet; and numerous dear friends. Kathy received degrees from Loyola University and Louisiana State University and was a public school teacher for the Orleans Parish School Board from 1945 to 1975. In 1962 she received the Valley Forge Teachers Medal from Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge. She also supervised education interns from the University of New Orleans and was a member and past president of Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary society for teachers. Kathy was an active, lifelong member of First Baptist Church of New Orleans. She considered it a privilege to have held many leadership positions within the church and its programs throughout the years. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 27, 2017, at First Baptist Church of New Orleans, 5290 Canal Blvd in New Orleans. Visitation will be held at the church prior to the Funeral, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church New Orleans - Building Fund, 5920 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, LA 70124; or to New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary – Women's Auxiliary, 3939 Gentilly Blvd.,New Orleans, LA 70126. Mrs. Dureau was one of my teachers when I attended John F. Kennedy Sr. High from 1967-1969. She was always such a gracious woman and fair with all of her students. She was an inspiration. My condolences to her family at her passing.

I loved Kathryn Adds Dureau as if she were my own real aunt. She has been so kind to my family throughout the years and I found her to be one of the most charming women I have ever known. I will miss her cards and notes, her sweet smile and encouraging words. She was an angel and a blessing.
